When I bought my First S2000 in September of 2000 I quickly noted a problem (posted it to the "old" board at that time). At around 400 miles I had pulled up against a new Corvette and I tried to dump the clutch around 4K RPM. As I did it, I literally did nothing, the RPM's bumped up against the red line in 1st and I was doing about 5 mph, I then shifted into 2nd and I hit the red line doing about 10 MPH. the entire time the clutch was slipping and there was a horrible smell. This was the only time I had ever experienced this problem but I was still pre-break in. For a year after this I never had a single cluch/tranny problem.

So yesterday I take my new 2001 for a spin with 200 miles on it. I was sitting in traffic at a light (behind a few cars) and this kid in an older Integra starts revving his engine as I pull up right next to him. I look over and smile at him as he sees me pull up (still reving). So I rev once for him (staying under VTEC). The light turns green and he peals out (with a few cars in front of him). So I juice the launch a little, dumped the clutch at maybe 3-4K RPM (to keep it under VTEC and only speed up to the 35 mph speed limit)... What happens, the exact same thing, ultimate clutch slippage through 2 gears and a horrible smell. I at least knew what it was doing this time so I was not bouncing of the rev limited, but I did hit VTEC hard and I did not want to do this.

I have heard many other people say this has happened to them at lower mile marks.

the real problem is you are not dumping (releasing) the clutch pedal fast enough... this will happen every time when giving the engine too many revs while letting out the clutch slowly.

I don't know why some of you try to do this in the early stage. Why don't you let your car break in properly before even attemp the launch?
I bet that if you put some miles I mean several thousand miles, you will not have this slippage problem when launching.
I didn't do this until I got past 10000 miles mark and since then I visited drag strip 3 times and had no slippage problems what so ever when dropping clutch at 6K+ rpm and also di several times on the street without a hitch.
It may have to do with the way you do the launch but I believe it has to do with new parts not being properly broken in.

It's not as easy as this, the cluch continues to slip even though you shift gears into 2nd(which involves depressing the cluch).... It ends when you totally back the car off. I dragged my last S2000 at 800 miles for the first time, had absolutly no problem with the cluch then or the many other times I took it to the drag strip.
