I completely agree on synthetic oil. I only use Mobil 1 5w30 all year long.

At what point did you switch to synthetic... I know this is a debate that never ends but I figured I'd ask CR people.. I know with my ap1 and ap2, I kept OEM dyno fluid until 10k, then made the switch. As far as diff, tranny fluid, and brake fluid, I made the switch to LE607, GM Syncromesh, and ATE Super Blue the first summer I had the car.

are you looking at total numbers for '08 and '09? the '09s haven't been added to that list. That's why the numbers look slightly off.
Nevermind, I was really tired when I posted that lol. For some reason I thought the 699 number was was the same as what was originally posted for the 08's(668).

I almost always switch at my first oil change OR when fuel economy levels off. As you may have noticed, most Hondas get better fuel economy after a few thousand miles due to the engine "lossening up" a bit. Once things have worn in, I switch to Mobil 1.

Have you noticed any difference using the GM Syncromesh fluid? The ONLY issue I've ever had with these transmissions is the shift from 1st to 2nd when cold. I wondered if the Syncromesh would help that at all?

Partly because I need to get subscribed to the new CR thread and partly because I'm sad about it, I figured I would share what I did this weekend.

Mocky,

I switched when the wear levels evened out in the UOAs I had done on my oil. This seems to consistently be around 15k on s2ks.

Also, I change oil generally following the "maintenence minder". The early samples see no oil added, but do include a lot of back roads and some track days. I was losing oil to blow by, but usually fill up to the "high" line when I change the oil, and was getting close to the low line when I changed it out. After switching to a different tire setup, I'm seeing a lot more blowby.

old UOA pic that shows the initial samples:

I put Nokian Hakkapellittas on and had a remote start installed. Bring it!

And for people who didn't know: 07+ are trunk wired for CD changers which makes iPod adapter installation a 15 second job. Literally.

That's actually one reason I did make the switch... although I normally don't drive the car in cold weather... What I did notice was the difference in cars with syncromesh... in some cars, it felt much smoother as you go through the gears (especially the 1-2 shift).. but in another car, it felt the same... sort of hit-or-miss.

I can't tell any difference with the diff fluid..I just made the switch based on recommendation from others on the board... and since I haven't had any issues with the ap1 or ap2, I figure in the CR it would be the same.

Can you elaborate on fuel economy leveling off? I have an app on my phone that I've used to track fuel mileage and with my ap2, fuel mileage would still fluctuate based on driving pattern. I never really saw a tapering off during the 40k miles I drove... (other than the time I had the 4.77s in)

Mike..where did you send your oil in for examination? Thanks for the write-up..I definitely would like to see what my oil wear will look like after I come back from the Dragon this April (and will be around 1k on the odometer).

Is there such thing as changing oil too often?

Most of my driving is pretty consistent. So, for me, it's been easy to see the fuel economy steadily improve from new through about 5000-7000 miles. Then it levels off at the point where it stays as long as I have owned the cars. I have seen this pattern on every Honda I have owned, and that is quite a few.

It was a bit more difficult with the S2000 just because the accelerator is SO tempting, even during break in, but I still saw the same pattern with it although not quite as consistent.

I got 23-24 MPG the first few tanks, then progressively improved to 26-27 by the time the 2nd oil change was needed. Of course I would not count long trip tanks, just those where I was doing my normal, mixed mode, daily commute and errands. I always do better than the EPA rating, even on the S2000.

I've never had an oil analysis done. That would certainly be a more exacting method.

I'll definately have to consider switching to Syncromesh when I change the transmission fluid. If it helps cold 1-2 shifting, then it should be worth it.
