Default Oil types

Hey guys, just picked up an 02 s2k with 43k miles on it a week ago. I dont have the manual and dont know the recommended oil vescositys. I live in Atlanta. I was thinking 5w30, full synthetic of course, probably mobil 1. Any thoughts on better oil or exactly what the book calls for?

Just saw the post below w/the 0w5 title, made me sick, couldnt bring myself to even click to read wtf the guy had to say.......

check out the "oil journals" in the under the hood forum. 10w-30 is the recommended oil. amsoil or redline is the best oil. mobile1 is easy to find. have fun with your new car.

read the oil journals definitely. the only real advantage of using synthetic is longer drain interval. if you're going to use synthetic and change your oil every 4000 miles, then don't bother.

there are good conventional oils that protect just as well, and in some cases BETTER than synthetics. they just require you change the oil sooner (between about 4000-7000 miles)

The best conventional oil is as good or better than SOME synthetic oils for not long OCI. I would not agree with this statement: "BETTER than synthetics"

Brianm26,
As other said, you should read the oil journals. If you don't mind changing oil every 6 months or 7500 miles for normal driving conditions or 3750 miles for severe conditions whichever is first, then Havoline SM/GF4 10W30 is one of the best conventional oil and it can be found almost anywhere. If you like to do once a year oil change or 10k miles whichever is first, then Synthetic 5W40 is the one to use. Valvoline Platinum full synthetic is top of the list for high quality and low cost.

I planned on changing it every 3k miles anyways, just to be 100% sure. I know its not really necessary, but I'd rather be extra careful with my baby. Just changed it with 10w30 mobil 1 full synthetic. Probably stick with that for now unless anyone strongly disagrees

If you really want to change your oil every 3k miles, then the cheapest oil you can buy with deep discount coupons at any autopart store would be more than good enough. Fully synthetic oil with 3k miles OCI is a waste of $, unless it is in a car driven about 3k miles a year.
