ok, help me decide...
Not meant to sound like bragging . . .
I have the money saved to buy any car I want, including one of the Italian exotics. My yellow 2002 should be here before Christmas. Reasons?
Looks: Sexy, svelte, cute.
Format: 2 seat convertible.
Performance: I don't imagine I'll likely outgrow nor master this car.
Quality: Honda
Reliability: also Honda
Price: Though not a determining factor, super value for the bucks.
I want to enjoy this car (toy!), not fiddle with broken bits nor spend a lot of time at the dealership. My first car was a 67 Triumph TR-4a bought new. The S is light years ahead in every way . . . yet still a chapter in that same book.
A 2 seat roadster!!!!

i'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but you're asking about two very different types of cars.
the BMW is a fine car, no doubt. but it's a four seat, sports/luxury coupe. it's very fun to drive, quick and handles well... for a sports coupe.
the S is a purpose built, two seat, high-performance roadster. it can also be smooth and quiet... for a roadster.
my 25cents is that you should figure out what it is that you want out of a car. then decide what kind of car fits those needs. then decide from there.
