Once you replace a soft top, is it never quite the same?

Default Once you replace a soft top, is it never quite the same?

I have a my2000, so 4-5 years ago, I bought an E-Z ON glass soft top and had it installed. The glass over plastic was obviously a nice upgrade, but I'm getting more annoyed with the rest of the top.

1) On the sides, above the windows, the top doesn't cover up the weather stripping. It does right behind the windshield, but is pushed up as it goes back, exposing all the weather stripping. It's like the fabric needs to be an inch wider across the top.

2) It leaks on the sides at the front top corners of the windows. And if it's really pouring, water runs down and slowly drips in around the top middle of the window. Luckily, my S2K hardly ever sees rain, but it also happens during a wash.

3) The top of the rear glass contacts/rests on the roll hoop covers when the top is up. It only makes a slight noise over seriously bumpy roads, but still, it's annoying.

I had none of these problems with the original OEM top. Anyone else without the original OEM top feel the same way?

And oh yeah, I've read about all these problems. I make sure the top folds down correctly, replaced the weather stripping, used Shin-etsu grease on the seals, ensured the cables on the sides are taut, hoped the sun would stretch the top, etc.

I guess it could have been the install, but I'm thinking it's just part of having an aftermarket top. I will say that the fabric looks terrific. Still, it makes me want to try a new top altogether. Ugh.

I went with a Robbins top. Fitment is basically the same as OEM, I haven't had any issues with it. Now the window on my OEM top detached from the soft top in the bottom section, so the weight of the window gave in and the whole thing just collapsed. I do feel better with the Robbins top though, they reinforced the sections where the OEM would rip and also it is better material. I would get in touch with topsonline which I'm sure you bought your top from. If you didn't I guess contact E-Z ON?

Having had an EZ On top and with what you're describing, I would call it a bad install. The glass most definitely should not be contacting anything when the top is up. The aftermarket glass is slightly smaller than OEM glass so if anything, there should be additional clearance.

Back about 9 years ago i had my top slashed and the frame bent while in a body shop parking lot for another issue. Body shop had it done and i have no regrets or issues to date , when done right it all works. showing signs of normal wear as it is down whenever possible.

Its due to the install, if you think about it; the factory tops were hand installed by someone from Honda with OEM quality parts to the correct specs.

Fast forward few years down, if you buy a aftermarket alternative without the "OEM" specs, stuff will tend to go wrong.
Add this in with a poor install and you would have a recipe for premature wear and tear on your new top.
Sorry to hear the news man, if you were local to Socal, there could be a lot of reputable shops that can help install your new top for you.

Thanks for the insight guys. Frustrating. Will add it to my list. Good news is, I've dealt with it for a few years, so the top still served its purpose for a good while.

as for your mentioned glass touching the roll hoop covers. I've installed many of tops(ez ,robbins, oem). tops are like body parts. some fit well, some not quite so well. I did darks2000's top and it fits well. I did one before that(Robbins) and the rear glass was touching the hoops. so with that said, either the top is not perfect or possible the install wasn't on par. if the installer did the job using the pre marked holes, then it would be the top. if they didn't then it would be the installer. you might adjust the rear support straps to help with this problem. hope this gives you some insight on the problem.

I too have an EZ on top and I love it! Except for how the top fits around the side windows exposing the weather stripping, it's like it has an arch in it and no matter what I do to stretch it it won't work. One of the biggest reasons I bought a hard top lol I would love any insight on how to fix the issue though,
Shitty picture.

You might try pm'ing Clovis, our local soft top replacement guru. He's done hundreds of replacements, he prefers the OEM or Robbins tops, but he may have helpful insight on how to fix your issues.

Yep, that's exactly what mine does. It's really annoying considering the rest of my car is immaculate.
