Guys the same thing happened to me 4 months ago.I'll admit I'm no race car driver and I usually have to replace my clutch qicker than most.

Anyway I was entering an exit leading into the highway and there were alot a cars flying by.I was on first redlined it ,went to 2nd redlined it,went to third was doing near 100 then dropped into into 2nd by accident. The car basically stopped in midair it was a weird feeling and I heard a bang in the engine. Then the engine light came on and I lost alot of power but was able to make it home.

Next day I went to my mechanic and he hooked my car up to the computer it showed I broke 2 valves. He said I was lucky the pistons didn't go through the roof.It cost me $1300.

I dont race anymore and I only push it when I'm on 5th gear.
Thats a severe scenario though. If its just crackted retaineers I don't think it will throw any kind of code. They would have to be manually inpsected.

It was manually checked after he checked it on the computer. My mechanic had my engine in pieces and showed me exactly went wrong.I dont know much about the inner workings of an engine so he tried to explain it to me the best he could.

Not sure how you can overrev. My regulator cuts off power whenever I pass redline. Then again I havent dropped it from 4th to 2nd either from 90. Take your word for it.
mechanical overrev

[QUOTE=dolebludger,Feb 20 2006, 12:25 PM] How do you overrev? Well, when you drop into 2nd at 90, the rev limiter won't do you any good. The moving mass of the car just pulls the engine revs right up into "no-no" territory.

if you hit 12,000, Your engine would be Toast IMHO

If your check engine light comes on and you get a Misfire Code, Chances are you will need to have some head work done.

i sure hope ur words r right becuz that would relieve some stress off of me...and plus i did the math...if my friend was going 89 and dropped it into 2nd...the most it would rev to me is prob 10,500 rpms...i dont get how u people say it would b 12,000 rpms and over...i think thats jus plain nuts...and nowhere close to being correct
It would behigher than 10,500 rpms... 12,000 sounds right...

I had this happen to me before. The first time nothing happened, but slowy I felt like the car was driving weird, and it was really botheering me. Then I did it again and it bairly even when into gear but the engine was weak from the first one and I bent my valves... Normally the cost would be around $2000 range (and thats still a good price), but I have some hook ups I got it done for $900. That was when I first got the car and since te engine rebuild has never happened again.

And just because something doesn't look wrong now doesnt mean much. There have been cases where cracked retainers show up and start creating problems much later down the road. I suggest you a do a compression and leak down test.

I have no idea how high the motion of the car going 89 would "drag up" the revs if it were shifted into 2nd, but do know it would exceed the 9K red line. By how much I don't know.

All I said was that the rev limiter does protect you from overreving on acceleration from failure to up-shift, but does not protect you on an improper downshift.

I'd have the car checked out.

I hope nothing is wrong.

Thanks,
Richard

It's a mechanical thing. The wheels are connected to the engine through the transmission. Shift from 4th to 3rd at red line and all of a sudden you're at 13000+ rpm because the wheels inertia is driving the engine, rev limiter or not.
