Default Over revving?

Honda,
I see, on this site, that some people are being denied engine warranty claims because the Dealer says it's been over revved. I thought the engine could go to the max until the rev-limiter cuts in. Am I wrong? Should we not go to the redline? I thought this was foolproof. Please explain. Mine is fine, but I've been having fun around the redline and I'd like to know if that's not good.
Thank you,
Joe

The rev limiter won't protect the engine from a mechanical over-rev. That means if your at redline in 3rd gear and you shift into 2nd instead of 4th, the speed of the car will cause the engine to over-rev.

I'm sure there are a few threads around which have much better explanations than mine.

It has been referred to around these parts as "The Money Shift"

Don't let this happen to you.

CPU will rev you out at 9.2K or something, mis-shift down and you could have a major problem.

Tampering the ECU (especially to change rev limit) is a no brainer to voiding the warranty if the dealer can prove it. Assuming you're warrantying something on the engine / drivetrain.

All they would have to do is check the ECU, realize its not stock and refuse your claim.
