Over revving?

As has been said, the CPU can't do shit to help you when you mechanically force the engine to rev to a certain amount above redline by putting it in too low of a gear for your speed.

I believe the ECU will give a code for an engine overspeed condition.. so the dealer is going to know if you blew that rod due to an 11k rpm mis-shift.

to my knowledge, if you bounce off the rev limiter (not due to bad shifting) you have nothing to worry about. Assumming you only do it afew times on accident and do not make a hobby out of it.

You have nothing to worry about.. unless you're in neutral and you really gun it. The rev limiter doesn't really limit revs.. it just cuts the fuel. The problem is the pistons are still accelerating, so one you hit fuel cut, they will continue to speed up for a split second. When you're in gear, there is a load on the engine, and that load quickly slows the piston acceleration once the fuel is cut. When you're in neutral, there is virtually no load, so if you gun it up to fuel cut, the pistons will continue to accelerate and could theoretically cause an over rev.

Hi everybody,
I'm the one who asked the question initially. Thanks for the comments. It makes sense, the momentum of the car, if pulled into a lower gear, will force the engine to rev faster. The rev-limiter merely cuts the fuel. Jeeze, I've done this! I wasn't used to the short-throw shifter.
