Pick up the latest issue of Car and Driver, they do a great review on these devices. BTW, they chose the Race Technology AX22 as their favorite (and most accurate).
i have the pro version. I've done some testing with it and it is not very accurate, esp. w.r.t. HP measurements. Its basically a fun toy, not a consistent tool that can be used for repeatable data. I definately would not buy it again.
i'm also in the market for one of these things....
is the Race Technology AX22 easy to use?? and how accurate was it???
cause if i remember right the gtech is supposed to be accurate to
+/- 1% on torque and hp numbers and like .01 second on 1/4 and they got shift lights heheheh.......

They are all reasonably accurate according to the test. The g-tech looked to be about 1/10 off or so with 1/4 times, off .05 on lateral G, and less that 1 mph off on trap speed.
None of these were tested for Hp or torque readings. I imagine because it'd be too much of a guess. Every car has a slightly different power output, even between dyno runs. Not only that, but getting an hp reading is dependant on knowing the exact weight of your car at that time. If you can test your car at when it weighs a repeatable amount, I'd imagine these devices would be accurate enough for comparison purposes. I wouldn't go around claiming my car makes [xxx] hp just because a G-tech or even Car and Driver's reference 30k dollar VBOX system said so, even C&D looks to dyno results for those numbers.
The AX22 was roughly twice as accurate as the G-box in the 1/4 mile (it also comes with a pricetag close to $1k). It was spot on for lateral-G and offers far more features than the G-tech. According to C&D, the AX22 was just about as accurate as their VBOX setup. All of these systems, even the 30k dollar VBOX were off some degree to actual drag timing lights. To me it looks like the true value of the AX22 would be in race data logging. With that unit, you store all your data on a compact flash card, so you can datalog large amounts of information for later analysis.

^ doesn't the gtech pro store up to like 30 runs or something like that??
I have no idea how many runs the G-tech stores. In any matter it's most likely far less than the ax22 could store with a 2Gb CF card. My belief is that the G-tech would be more than adequate for timing acceleration runs. Would I pay the $700 or so difference between the ax22 and the G-tech?... probably not. If my goal was to do some data logging to improve my performance on track days I might be tempted to get the better one though.
It all comes down to your personal preference, we all take these magazine's test numbers as gospel more or less. When it comes down to it, those aren't even 100% accurate. Just how much do you want to pay to get as close as possible to that? I imagine this answer will be vary from person to person.
The g-tech will store up to 2 hours of data in the road racing mode. As far as drag runs, I think it will store about 20-30 runs depending on the length of the run.
I'm tellin ya, for the money, the g-tech can not be beat.
