Both of mine went off with nobody in the seat. At a impact speed of less than 18 miles per hour.

As for little kids riding shotgun , I take both my sons 4 & 6 for rides. Have since the oldest was 3 and the youngest was 1. Before that they rode in the Miata . Drive carefully and you will be fine.

The individuals that answer the phone at AHM customer service know just about nothing. They are there to calm down pissed off customers, and that's about it. A 30 second phone call to the engineering dept. would have clarified the issue over a seat weight sensor.

Trust me, the 00-05 S2000 doesn't use one. If they did, there would be a wiring for it and troubleshooting for the system. There is niether. I had both front seats out of a 02 today. There is not any wiring attached to the passengers seat.

I never pointed the finger at you. My point was that something like this must be screened with great care, especially when all the evidence indicates that information to be FALSE. It has been shown time and time again on this forum that "Honda" knows very little about this car and hence, we must be careful what we take for gospel. Doing so in this case can kill.

I did a little research before I got the S2K into fatalities from airbags, and nearly all of them have been attributed to either not using seatbelts or sitting to close to the airbag. The number of children killed by airbags who were sitting properly is absolutely miniscule. Just push that seat as far back as it goes, make sure they wear a belt and sit properly, and don't worry about it.

You can drive carefully but it doesn't mean someone else will too.

Thank you all for the replies... I really apreciate the time y'all have taken to put me straight.

I called my local dealer (Brown, Charlottesville, VA) and the guy that I spoke to said that he didn't know, but he'd get somebody to call me back... Nobody's called back yet.

Just to add a bit of strength to Xviper's argument (and everyone else too), for sure, there is NO weight sensor. I have removed the seats in my 01 multiple times, there is no wiring..so I was thinking, what if the weight sensors are attached to the bolts, you know, get the total weight from there...No. You can see the street/sidewalk below your car through the bolt holes in the floorpan, no good there.

As a safety note, see your local and state laws about youngsters in or out of car seats riding in your S. Without an airbag kill switch (as they come) it may be illegal not to mention EXTREMELY unsafe for kids to ride. Even with a kill switch, I don't consider it worth the risk. People out there drive stupid, don't let your children pay the price for some stranger's stupidity.

I recently spoke with AHM reps getting an airbag disable switch for my car. AHM told me that only the 2000-2003 models have the switch available and nothing is offered for the 2004 and up models. That is the current situation with Honda.

One thing that might be of some comfort is that the airbags for the passenger side can deploy in several ways. The least dangerous way is the type that deploy up and out towards the passenger. This is the type on our cars. If the seat is upright and all the way back, with the child properly restrained in a booster seat, there should be minimized risk of airbag injury. By minimized I mean that the airbag deployment would be furthest from the child.

The stats for airbag deaths are overinflated and flawed, IMHO. They quote the number of passengers and children who were killed by airbags, but what I really wanted to know was:

1. Were they otherwise properly restrained? With California's strict laws regarding kids in cars, I still see people driving around with kids unrestrained in cars bouncing around in the seats.
2. Assuming the airbag did not deploy or was not present, was the accident of sufficient violence to have caused a death anyway?
3. Airbags could have caused a handful of deaths (what 12 or so?) over the past few years, but how many kids were saved by airbags? How many are alive today because of them? What is the percentage of kids saved vs. kids killed?

Yeah, I can take a header off a cliff not wearing a seatbelt. When the car has it's wheelbase shortened by 6 feet (with me inside) the airbags will pop and I'll assuredly hit them and get killed anyway.

The airbags are not my biggest worry in this vehicle. It's getting T-boned. My kid would ride it out better than I would because she's got an aluminum cage around her where I don't.

This is the Recaro child seat. It's the safest and strongest on the market and not to mention one of the most costly ones too. It's a perfect fit for the S2000 (it's designed to fit Recaro seats).
