I think knowing whether you just passed a cop on the road or whether one is in traffic behind you periodically turning on his radar is an important fact.

You don't always see them. But what I don't know is when radar is effective- for example, I've heard people say that a policeman has to be stationary to use the radar...but that they can be traveling and use laser speed detection. I don't know what the truth us, but damnit, I want to know if the signal is coming from behind me. I see too many people get pulled over not from cops in front or parked in traffic, but ones who sneak up behind you in traffic.

S2.001K,

From what I can tell from the manual, the only time you receive directional notification on the SRX is when it's doing it's "laser shifting" or scrambling the laser so the police can't get a reading. It tells you if it's doing this in the front or in the back. It doesn't seem like it tells you the direction of X, K, or Ka.

It sounds like the V-1 may have some serious competition. When it comes to laser, the V-1 notifies you of the direction it came from, but by then it'd be too late. Laser almost always has to be pointed directly at you in order for you to detect it. The V-1 does not scramble or jam laser. In all of the tests I've seen with other laser detectors, none of them were able to detect laser unless it was pointed at them. Again, this doesn't do anyone any good.

If the SRX performs as advertised, we've finally got something to protect us from laser.

Now we just need to figure out a way to get the price down.

Realdeal,
You are correct. It can only tell direction for laser. The purpose for that is it gives you a little more information to help you determine your best course of action while the unit is "cloaking" your speed. The radar bands on give strength and type; not direction. Also, the unit allows you to terminate the shifting after reducing speed when the "cloaking" is no longer needed.

BAD S2K,

Did you get it installed? What do you think so far? How complicated did the install seem? Did you go for the hidden display/voice option? Have you heard any more information about this? It's 100 bucks extra but I haven't heard much about it. Can you give me more info on your dealer? I may give them a call and try installing one myself.

I think the small display can be hidden easily enough but it would be interesting to not have a display and just rely on the voice. I think I'd rather be able to see something light up and beep instead of just relying on a mysterious voice but it's interesting none the less.

I 've had it installed for 2 days now and I love it. I will take some pictures when I get back from my trip. I mounted the display on the wheel column. I'm 6'0 and I can still see the lights(dummy lights) over the top. Of course the rear "transceiver" mounts on the top of the tag. With the hollow spot above the tag the wire descend from there and can't be seen from behind. The 2 front 'transceivers" are mounted high in the grill bolted to the piece of bimetal at the top of the grill opening behind the bumper. This gives them the highest -most direct view of the road. I have the Coastal metals grill(black) and had to cut 2 notches so that it wouldn't block the laser "transceivers". The radar receiver was mounted behind the CM grill in the center of the opening. Since all these components are black they are not noticeable without looking for them. I don't believe the install to be too difficult. I did get the Voice/hidden display option. But right now it's still in the box. I'm not sure where to put it right now and I didn't want to get hasty and install it in a bad spot.
I like the features of this unit. I had a 8500 before this and the SRX has the self dimming and muting feature. This unit also has to volume levels that can be adjusted with a rotary dial. Normal and LOUD. The loud was too loud for me even with the top down at 80 and the OEM stereo turned up. The normal setting at 3/4-7/8 volume is just right for me.
The performance so far has been somewhat more sensitive than the 8500 mounted high on the windscreen with less false alarms. I haven't had the please to get a laser alarm and check out the performance and shifting of the SRX. I report when I get back from Georgia this weekend with some pictures of the unit.

I could buy 5 normal radar detectors and strap them to the hood, roof, trunk, tire, and one to the side of my head just to make sure.

BAD S2K,

Thanks for all of the detailed information. I'm anxious to see your photos and hear how the voice works. That's cool that you can tell it to stop doing the "laser shifting" once you've slowed down. Otherwise this could be a big problem when the cops hit you with their gun again and again and still can't get a reading.

I still don't think hardly anyone knows about this detector. In a few months when everyone is talking about it, you will have been the first.

I'm getting my S2000 in the middle of December. My dealer is going to call Escort and see if he can get one for me. But I'm still hoping to get one for much cheaper.

BAD S2K.

I was in Charleston over the weekend on a short vacation. Sunday afternoon I was walking down Meeting Street with my wife and saw a yellow S2000 shoot by with a female passenger. Was that you? I was tempted to run after the car, but I can't sprint at 30 mph .
