This pisses me off....
I want to tell a story to those who own an import sports vehicle that biased americans will not understand.
I live about a 1/2 hour north of Detroit, the friggin autombile capitol of the world. EVERYONE and their brother drives a Mustang, Camaro, &/or Firebird. They are SO common it makes me sick.
I own a Black Exterior/Red Interior 2001 Honda S2000. My buddy owns a 94 Mustang GT. He constantly gets "the looks" and "oohs" and "aahhhs". I DO NOT GET IT!
What pisses me off is that I own/drive a work of art/enginerring! He drives a piece of shit with a bigger engine (physical size)
I am 23 years old. I appreciate taste, design, efficientcy, technology, superiority....all which american cars lack and imports excell in. The average idiot joe wants an american sports car, I, on the other hand, am an intelligent being that respects fine pieces of work and strives to be better at things everyday of my life.
Now I am not upset that I don't get attention (I am happily in a 7 year relationship with my girlfriend) What makes me sick is that 97% of the population is stupid, ignorant, blind, & dumb. My one buddy is SO bad that he only buys GM cars since his dad works for GM. I am able to get the GM, Chrysler & Ford discounts since I have family members who work at the plants but I still REFUSE too. It's sad that we americans are TOO loyal where we foolishly WASTE our money on shit to "support america" when it builds some of the worst vehicles on the road.
American cars come in too many models. You can get a firebird with 3 or 4 different engines! Why? There is NO character to that. It's simply a body that comes with different powerplants. No thought is put into the weight distribution, balance, rigidry, etc.. of the car since it all depends on how you "customize" it.
My S2000 comes in one flavor. It is designed specifically with one engine that turns out more horsepower than engines double in size. It is well-crafted & hand built. Attention to detail is great. The dash is plain, yet finished looking. My sister's firebird's dash is EXTREMELY ugly.
I love efficientcy...getting something out of nothing. We americans can't seem to grasp this idea. Honda, Toyota, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, etc. understand this.
That's probably why I only use Macs.

I agree that an S2000 is better engineered than a mustang and most other American made cars, but you need to appreciate the fact that different people have different tastes, and not everyone is going to like the same things that you or I do. American cars have traditionally been designed with a "bigger is better" attitude. Some people buy into that type of mentality, and some don't. As a mechanical engineer, I understand that bigger is worse in many situations. But I would never go so far as to say that one is better than the other, as you are implying.
Also, you are in the automotive capital of the United States. There is definitely a sense of pride in the automobiles that are produced there. True, there is a large amount of engineering done in the area for non-dometic (a.k.a. "import") cars, but the Fords, Chryslers, etc. are the icons of Detroit and the American automotive industry...and you're driving the competitor's car.

Did you buy the S2000 for you to enjoy, or for others to enjoy? You will find as you grow older that most people just don't care about what other people drive. Most people are sitting at redlights in their shinny new Pontiac Grand Ams thinking that everyone is looking at their car, while at the same time, you think they are looking at yours. Just enjoy your car and be proud that you are driving an S2000! Once you get past what everyone else is thinking, you'll find that you will enjoy your S2000 even more. The S2000 is definately an eye catcher. I get looks all the time with mine. Just enjoy it man!
I personally would not buy any of the american cars that you mention, but I have absolutely nothing against people in general that do.
You are taking an elitist attitude when you call others 'idiots'. Go back and read your article to yourself. Please do not judge other people based on decisions you make in your life. Everyone makes decisions based on reasons that are personally important, and for you to lash out because their reasons differ from your own is very self-righteous. If these people have a problem with you for buying japanese, then I agree you have a right to defend yourself. But don't make the mistake of grouping them all into the same negative category.
On the other hand, I can also understand the need to rant and get things off your chest, which is what i think you wanted to do here, and it's fine by me. I cannot begin to imagine the crap you must take from all the 'buy american only' fanatics in your area.
You have my congratulations on thinking for yourself and being open-minded.
But don't be so close-minded when it comes to respecting other peoples decisions.
peace,
pat

This was the perfect end.....to a perfect post.
Hey, remember you live in the Capitol of the American Auto Industry. Of course people there are going to discourage you buying a foreign auto........regardless of what you consider superior styling, quality, etc.
And don't be fooled by the Nameplate.........
Mercedes are made in Alabama
BMW in North Carolina
Honda in Ohio
Toyota in Kentucky
and on and on................The same Americans building your Fords, Jeeps, and Chrylers are making the Hondas, Bimmers and Merc's
The tendancy is to gravitate toward what your peers regard as acceptable. You have not. That's not a bad thing. Nobody's got the exact same tastes. Just enjoy your ride, ............and keep away from the auto plants and you will continue to love your car.

Trust me, I am far from jealousy. I started the thread to display ingnorance. This IS my personal opinion, nothing else.
My comparison was also aimed directly at sport cars. Notice that I never once mentioned a civic, grand am, escort, etc, etc...just sport cars.
I bought the car for me, no one else. I enjoy it completely. I appreciate it....other's (97%), do not. The "dumb" people that I wrote about are the foolish people that feel "their" car is "better" cause it has a V8.
Some of you didn't truly understand what I was implying. That's okay though, I forgive you.
