Strange, I have always had a rock crack my window at about the same time the pitting was getting too bad...

Throwing rocks at your own windshield doesn't qualify...

I had some pits in my windshield, and there was a glass repair place at the establishment where I used to have my car washed, and they "fixed" it for free. My insurance had the glass coverage apparently, but its cheaper for insurance company to pay like $20-50 to prevent worse damage than $200+ for a new windshield.

Many insurance companies (at least where I live) will adjust your rate based on number of claims made; so, if cost isn't too high, it's usually best to pay for it out-of-pocket rather than making a claim where you'll then be paying for it for years to come. I have a co-worker who is having a tough time getting reasonable rates on new car insurance because she has alot of prior insurance claims (even though she has a spotless driving record).

I'm probably late the party but some insurance companies do have the safety glass deductible where your deduct gets reduced to like 100 bucks for instance. Check you local laws but here in CA if the winshield is cracked anywhere in the driver line of sight (i.e. left winshield wiper coverage area) it needs to be replaced. As far as if the damage is bad enough, is it spiderwebbing? If so yes.

As far as I know they (the insurance companies) do not raise your rates based on glass claims alone. Only other types of claims such as collision and comprehensive claims.

Like I said above, in the last three years I have had a total of 5 windshields replaced and my rate has not gone up

BTW- I live in Central Oregon and drive over Mt. Hood at least 10-15 times per year to Portland. Driving over the pass that is covered in rock will tend to chip the crap out of your windshield and paint
