Is the plastic rear window really THAT bad?

I have had no problems with the plastic rear window. If/when it does see wear and needs repaired, I will 'hopefully' be replacing it with a '02 top.

Read some of the posts towards the end of this thread:
Anyone interested in a glass rear window?

I'm hoping that eventually, someone will put this mod together in a neat affordable package

Erm, looks like that was the wrong thread. I'm not sure where it was, but a few people have upgraded their plastic windows to glass.

I don't have any problems with mine either. Still clear, but you do need to be careful with it. Keep it clean, get some Plexus, get a roof well (Muz) mat, and use a towel or "Miata tube", and you should be fine. There are pros and cons to both windows. The glass won't scratch, but it is smaller.

No matter how well you take care of the plastic window, it will eventually need to be replaced.

However, I estimate that it should last at least 5 years in outdoor exposure.

Unfortunately, unlike most other roadsters, an upgrade to glass is very costly since you must replace the entire top mechanism.

So I guess it depends on how long you plan to keep the car.

BTW, the price differential between a new MY02 and a used car shouldn't be that high. You should be able to find a new MY02 in your area for around $30K. The price differential should be closer to $3K. In that case, the MY02 improvements are well worth it, IMHO.

It is no big deal until you are in a situation when you cannot see out clearly (is distorted, or fogs up, or gets a fine mist on the outside, etc.) and that allows a ticket.. or even an accident. In other words it is no problem until the day it really is.. and that does not even address the longevity or maintenance issues. IMO it sucks.

It seems everyone wants to tell you about the rear window.
I have heard that it is true that Honda softened up the suspension. I have an'01, so I don't know how much different it is. Also, if taken care of properly, the plastic rear window is fine and the visibility is better because it is larger.
If you get one, HAPPY MOTORING!!!

The improvement is in the transmission, not the suspension...

Not exactly accurate.. the '02 transmission appears to contain all the field fixes but is essentially the same as previous years. The suspension is re-tuned with different spring, bar, and possibly shock rates.

putting on the glass top DOES NOT require a new frame. Search for the thread. If you have to have rear glass, buy a 2000 or 2001 and retrofit the 2002 top... per instructions in thread!
