This is happening to me sort of. My problem is once it's warmed up. Here's what happened last night:

I get in the car (dewy after a rain shower and cool about 10C) start it up and off I go. Things are normal until about the time I get to 3 bars. I decel to a stop light, 3rd, 2nd, brake and clutch in. I come to a stop and I'm sitting there waiting for the light. I notice the engine is dead?

I start it up and off I go again everything's normal until I press in the clutch at the next light. Revs drop past 1000 and straight to 0. I start it, revs go to 1500 or so and then immediately back to 0 again. This is a repeating issue and the only way to keep it from dying is to keep giving it some gas.

MAP sensor?

cthree --

must be a southern cali thing ... i have a problem more similar to yours than the original poster. no problem what so ever when warming up, but once there ... when i start the car, it immediately drops to 500 and ALMOST stalls. also occasionaly when stopping at a light. it has been doing that for near a week, and i have been hoping it would learn, but hasn't.

i did reset the ecu after the fires, as i wanted to wipe the slate clean after the smokey air left, but as you know, that's been a couple weeks now.

i will likely try the tap methodology in the near future.

Interesting that you mention the fires. Have you checked the air filter since then? Not that it would cause this problem, but maybe. While warming up, the idle would be slightly higher, so maybe that would keep the car breathing. Once warm, the idle would drop down, but maybe it can't breathe well enough there, and just dies.

Grasping for straws, but at least it's an easy check/fix.

mxt -- i think about checking my filter about 1x / day, but always forget to (i have a cai, so it is a bit more of a process to get to the filter). while i did make a connection between the filter and the near stall, i didn't think it through as far as you, so now am thinking 2x / day about checking it!

good idea,

There is another current thread by someone who has a similar problem. It was fixed by replacing the throttle position sensor. Yet another thread within the last month indicated the fix was done by replacing the idle air control valve/solenoid. If the "MAP whack" fails, these should be your next targets for diagnosis.

I think it has a lot to do with the damp and cool weather lately. Seems ok during the day but it's at night it seems to be a problem. I normally store my car in the garage and haven't had this issue but for the past couple of weeks it has been in the driveway (too much crap in the garage currently).

Mine will stall when it's cold on first start.

I believe a fan kicks in right away and at that point it stalls. On 2nd start attempt it's fine.
