Quality-vote here as well. Plus I'd rather not have things overheating in an otherwise quite closed area (aka secret compartment) once all is installed. Take your time Mac. Do the deed the way you know you want to do it . We'll all be here waiting.

The nice thing about this is that I don't have one of these already...so I *really* don't know what I'm missing. I know what I want...but its not like I'm "doing without it" since I've never had it in the first place. I'm a patient soul when it comes to having a quality product.

hrm. Mac, didn't you order a bunch of these boards already at some cost to yourself?

if you're going to take a hit financially over this, i would personally be willing to accept one of the early design models and risk early circuit death and heat issues in order to help you offset some of the costs to yourself.

don't get me wrong.... i'm not saying that i'm dying like Bass to get my hands on one of these , i'm just saying -- perhaps there are some of us who are willing to throw the dice and help you offset your prototyping expenses.
otherwise, my vote is for quality and your comfort w/ the design.

just some thoughts...

One of the funniest posts ever...IMO.

I laughed so loud my neighbor down the highway sent the cops to investigate the noise. The cops thought someone was choking a chicken.

I've run through all of the calculations and measurements 10s of times, and the components are WELL within their rated capacity (between 10-50%). That being said, I'm just really surprised by the amount of heat put off by the power resistors and transistors. Once my parents leave tomorrow, I'll turn it to half power and leave it there for several hours. If the case is still uncomfortably hot (at full power, the case is quite warm, but you can hold it in your hand without issue), I'll look at a new design.

This little setback does scare me, though...I've put in a little less than $1000 in parts for both the prototypes and production product. Looking over the schematic, I will definitely have to have a new board cut if I change the design to use the new LEDs...if that happens, I'll be out about $300, for sure (boards, unused parts, etc.). I'm kind of committed at this point, else I'm out too much money.

mac, I for one would be willing to take a subtle increase in cost. You, being a person and not a corporation, and a great guy from what I can tell, shouldn't have to eat the cost of this too bad. With enough buyers hopefully we can all help you out Thanks for spending so much time on this!
