Default Power steering out EPS on

Two days ago started car and when I went to turn steering wheel it was like driving a Mack truck (much lower seating position). Looked on dash and EPS light was on. My first thought was power steering pump was out, but we don't have a power steering pump. Drove home with tons of road feel, and two hands on the wheel. When I restarted car power steering was fine and no EPS light. Has not happened again so far. What is the likelihood this was a one time fluke or is it going to happen again?

There is a power steering pump. Instead of it being run off the engine and taking power from the engine all of the time, it is run with an electric motor. The motor only spins when you turn the wheel. In the near future, more cars will have EPS as it increases fuel mileage.

Same thing happened to me and to others but only the one time. Appears that it is more likely to do it if you turn the wheel IMMEDIATELY after starting engine. If it happens again , just turn off engine and restart and should be fine. Apparently it takes computer a second to "initialize" the system.

Now after thinking about it, I was on a gravel parking area at time. May have turned wheel immediately after starting, something I would not do on pavement.
