Now that you guys bring up the topic about European cars don't need to depress clutch to start, I'm curious if any of you Europeans has ever pressed the Start button outside the car while it's in 1st gear? What would it do?
Well... if you have the key in the ignition and turned, making it ready to start...
It's very likely it would start & run

I know this verges off topic, but as an old fart I remember being able to fire up a car's starter while it was in gear (using key starters, that is) before all the "safety" interlocks got introduced in the US. I always thought that was a good thing (better than having an automatic tranny) because you could use the starter to get you off, say, railroad tracks if your engine happened to conk out while an oncoming train was coming at you! The fact that your car would lurch forward if you were too acclimated to automatic tranny cars to push in the clutch... well, so be it.
