Price of import???
Can someone possibly help my newbie self out? I am joining the air force in july and hope to be stationed at either ramstein or spangdahlam air force base in germany. All because I was born there and still have family there. It then made me wonder about the purchase of a nicer car. So my question is: If I buy an s2000 in germany and mod it some, and the time comes where I get relocated, and I dont want to sell the car, how much would it cost to get the car imported and legalized here in the states? Thanks for any info
It costs a lot of money. At one point a while back, s2k's were selling for a lot less money in germany than here. I looked into purchasing one and shipping it over, but the costs were prohibitive. I think that it would have cost upwards of $10k.
AFAIR, the military has relocation services. When I was in the military I was told about these services, but I didn't need them and didn't pay much attention.
The amount you can do depends on things like rank, marital status, and time on duty station. The amount is usually weight and/or cargo capacity.
They might have some service for relocating vehicles. I would think that it is a fairly common occurance in the military.

Is there a civilian program for importing a used car into the US?
I'm doing some research, with the possibility of buying a JDM S2000 (used) to own here in the US. Any thoughts? Ideas for where to research (I'm non-military).
I seem to recall something in my past where the gov't allowed you to bring one "grey market" car into the US. Is that long gone? Anyone know what I'm talking about?
