Default Are the prices for S2000s out of control?

So I bought my low mileage S2k last April, and at the time I thought I overpaid. For hahas, today I was looking for similar car, and I can not find one nation wide for anything less than 2k more than I paid last year.

Really at this point, any very low mileage (<30k) S2k will cost about 20 grand+, regardless of year. When I sold my C6, I was taking quite a step down (financially speaking) to get into an S2000. Now clean Vettes are selling about the same as clean S2ks (20-25k).

Obviously someone feels these cars are special. But are these prices crazy?

Not crazy in my opinion. But it can depend on the year. CRs and 06+ models still have more value as they're newer. Low mile ones can go for mid 20s to the 30s for a CR.

This is what happens when a special car goes out of production. Any low mileage mint examples will fetch top dollar.

Any car that is popular and out-of-production,the prices always seem too high.

Supply & demand.

they are overpriced, wait and you'll find a deal and that goes for anyone shopping for one. People get the cash in hand or get approved for a loan and buy the first one they can find it took me 4 months to find mine and i got an awesome deal on it.

Yes there are ridiculously over priced at times, and I don't really understand why. By no means is the s2000 a rare, or limited car. I read something on here a while ago that somebody had figured out that honda had sold right around 70 thousand s2000's in the U.S alone. Maybe it was North America, but I'm pretty sure it was the U.S based on how they figured it out.

Obviously the 00-05's are abundant, and each year after 06 they produced less and less. So I can understand the 06+ holding onto value fairly well.

Of course any C/R will command a healthy price, cause it's a C/R. Duh.

Other than that I really don't understand why the values are artificially so high in general. I mean at this point the car is so old, generally speaking only "enthusiasts" (I use the term loosely) are buying them. So really everybody is kinda shafting everybody on pricing for cars and parts.

I also notice a lot of people get into the s2000 game for a short while, then try to dip out and bring back nearly 100% of the money they've put in. Sorry guys not realistic when you just added 40k odo to the once low mileage 3 owner car.

I very clearly understand why. Because if you want a fast, pure, enthusiast level roadster, what are your alternatives under $40000? A Porsche Boxster? What else? Anything?

Ignoring the roadster aspect of the car, it's still a bargain sports car. The cars are simply selling for what people value them at.

True, true a very good point. But there are literally boat loads of s2000's out there, like a lot. So much so I don't think most people really comprehend how many were made.

Most are early model AP1s which have been clapped out by ricers with terrible suspensions, loud exhausts, and wheels that don't fit. "Sickest S2000 ever bro". These people absolutely destroy the resale value of their car and make them highly unappealing to the general public. For this reason, poorly modded AP1s with tons of miles are as cheap as chips (seriously, under $10k).

I don't have the exact numbers, but I believe less than half of all S2000s produced are AP2s. More so, clean AP2s are the cars which really command the premiums these days, and these cars are becoming fewer in number as each day goes by.

Here is my take. There really isn't a better roadster in the price range of 15-20k than the S2000. There are literally no challengers that can do what it can stock for stock. Miata? Not enough power. Z4? Lmfao what a joke. BRZ? Close but no cigar. The next step up would be an Elise or Exige but they command double to triple the price. So given that around 15-20k is a much more affordable range for most people and the lack of direct competent competitors...is there really a choice besides the S2000? Until there is a car that can really compete directly with the S2000 in the price range, it will maintain its value regardless of how many are made. Still to this day, the S2000 is one of the greatest roadsters ever made.

Sure you can find some in the 10k range...but they are usually trashed by a bunch of kids "slamming" them or "hella flushing" them. If you can find one unmolested in that price range, I would jump on it in a heartbeat.

Nope, no comparison. I'll give you out of control car prices.

1991 325is (e30) in 2010 - $3500
1991 325is (e30) in 2014 - $7000

E30 M3 in 2005 - $10k-12K
E30 M3 in 2014 - $25k-$30K

Air cooled Porsches

87-89 G50 911 carrera in 2009 - $20k
87-89 G50 911 carrera in 2014 - $35k+

964 carerra in 2009 - $25K
964 carerra in 2014 - $$35-$40k

993 carrera in 2008 - $30K
993 carrera in 2014 - $45-$50K+

Those are insane cases of car prices climbing... And in most cases, the cars now are in worse condition than they were 6-7 years ago. I only know those prices back then, because I was shopping for all of those cars at said times... My biggest regret was not buying an e30 m3 back in 2005 and instead buying a 951, which was a money pit (not that the e30 wouldn't have been one either).

This car (s2000) will continue to climb in price as they get rarer, due to all the kids crashing the AP1s (some of those are super cheap at $10k-12K).

Many other cars of the past era like the 997 GT3/GT3RS will also climb in price - last of the 6-speed GT3s, and no rear steering like the current variant.

I'm fairly certain e46 m3 prices will also climb. e90 m3 prices will continue to decline for a bit more, but are potential collector cars with the advent of turbos and dual clutch transmissions taking over everything.
