Are the prices for S2000s out of control?
From my own experience last summer the market is highly regional. And the only stock or near stock cars were few. I chased a dozen in Ohio but most were sold before I could even look at them. I specifically wanted an '06 or later and not buggered with forced induction, etc.
Autotrader is your friend in this search. I found mine at a Honda dealer. Good Carfax, serviced for sale, detailed, etc. Had horrible non-OEM black wheels (making it look like the wheel covers were stolen) which is probably why it was for sale for two weeks before I grabbed it.
Supply and demand determines price and the supply is decreasing with every wreck, supercharger, and "track car."
What's an extra $1000 or $2000 for the right car?
I have an advantage in that the S2000 is a spare car, not something I have to depend on for daily driving. I went thru the "only car is a roadster" long ago and vowed never again.

Prices vary a lot because the car has been out for quite a while. Thus, year, mileage and condition are widely varied and pricing is equally as varied. I recently picked up an 05 with only 6800 miles in stock/mint condition for $24,800. It's probably more than almost every other deal out there right now, but given the mileage and condition, I'm super happy with my deal. As for any future appreciation? My plan is to enjoy the car on nice summer days for the next 5-10 years, so mileage should stay very slow. Probably inline with the type of mileage I used to put on my crotch rockets. If/when I sell it, it will be interesting to see what a perfect, mint S2000 is worth 10 years from now.
I recently saw a 2006 silverstone get sold for $20,000 with 53k miles on it. Sadly the moment I walked onto the lot to buy it, it was sold to another guy 20 minutes prior...
Having been searching for s2k on the market for the past 2-3 months, I can definitely find a huge amount of salvage titled AP1s for dirt cheap and then the once in awhile an AP2 with a clean title come out with a premium price of at least $23,000.
San Diego is terrible to try to find these cars since the weather is always nice...

They seem to be appreciating in value at the moment. I was looking at a 07 NFR low miles (10k) the other day that was asking $29.9! I was like no way but someone walked in the next day and bought it for asking price. I think the dealers are asking ~$26k for low miles (under 30k miles) at the moment which is up from 6 months ago. I have been looking for about 8 months. I am currently considering a local blue '07 with <25k miles that just showed up as a 1 owner trade in. They want just under $25k for it. Yikes. I would not have considered that 4 months ago but I am seriously thinking about it. It is my second favorite color for this car.

True, true a very good point. But there are literally boat loads of s2000's out there, like a lot. So much so I don't think most people really comprehend how many were made.
But I am loving the forum and community! Which only makes me want to get one more....and I am always half tempted to wave to s2k owners on the street even though I don't own one
