Production numbers
Aside from the controversy with regard to what members were told about S2k production numbers, even the larger projected numbers will continue to place the S2k in a very exclusive niche.
I think what is more important is the possibility that we are participating in the establishment of a new CULT car. Two other cars, that I am very familiar with, are the Porsche 356 and BMW 2002. Both these vehicles established a following based upon the fact that there really were no other similar cars available. The 356 was the only rear engine sportcar available starting in 1947 and continuing to 1965. The 2002 changed how people looked at sportscars and established a new car category - the sports sedan. I think the S2k with its Vtec high reving engine and functional approach to design may make the S2k sufficiently distinguishable from other roadsters so as to allow for the S2k's development in the future as a cult car.
And btw the production numbers for the 356 were about 77,000 worldwide. The 2002 was produced in the 100,000s. Values for typical 356s are far in excess of original values and 2002s in decent shape are valued at 75-250% of original value. The S2k is not in the same stratosphere as a Ferrari, and is probably more comparable to the above cited cars, which were both excellent autos well within the financial reach of most people. As for the boxster, it shows how far Porsche has strayed away from its original concept and clientele. Intrinsic to the traditional sportscar mentality was an engine that you could look at and play around with. The boxster's engine is basically inaccessible which is alright for my Toyota Previa (engine under driver's seat)but be damned if I'll spend over $50,000 and need a flashlight and mirrors to see my engine. Best analogy that I can think of - is fishing for lunker bass in a five foot hole. Sure the big one is down there but all you can do is haul it out of there. No room to have fun and play with it!
