Default Progressive Auto Insurance

Hey all!
I've been shopping around for car insurance and got what seems to be a great price from Progressive. The savings alone on my S would be over $370 every 6 months. Who here has had Progressive or dealt with them? What's your opinion? Currently I have Allstate and although they were good when I had an accident back in 2000 (w/ my Prelude - not my fault - I was rear ended), I think I'm paying too much for having a clean driving record.

Thanks!

~Kim~

Progressive are really aggressive about getting paid on time -- if you miss a bill by a week, they'll cancel your policy. Their rates are really good, though.

I've had to use them twice. The first time, when I was rear-ended at a light, their response was really good. The second time, when I totaled a car at an autocross, they were a royal pain in the butt, but they ended up paying out to the tune of $40k, so I can't complain too much.

Recommended, but with the caveat that you pay up front to avoid billing hassle.

i have progressive, . . the rates are good, but service wasnt that great when i encountered a deer a few months ago. i was supposed to have updates every 3 days on my car from them ,.only got 1 in a period of 6 weeks. they also screwed up a few other things and gave me a hassle on a rental etc etc. i was going to go to a different company when my renewal came 2 days ago, i noticed that it dropped about another $70 a month, so ill give them another 6 months. So, as pedalfaster said, they can be a hassle, but eventually everything gets done.

They saved me quite a bit of money and I'm with them right now, luckily I haven't had to make any claims or had any problems with them.

i had allstate and then progressive but switched to kemper and am saving over 600 bucks a year, although my driving record is full of tickets. They seem to charge a huge surcharge for tickets and "high performance vehicles" as they classify them. I found progressive to have great service and good coverage but there are cheaper insurance companies out there, if thats your priority.

My sis like you has progressive and a clean record and hers would be 300 cheaper a year with a geico and kemper...shop around if you have to..

Every region and club does things slightly differently, but generally there's a designated starting area. There will be a guy there who will help you position your car and make sure you're not too far forward or back. You'll have the option to align your car however you wish.

Launching hard is allowed, but most courses are designed so that it doesn't help -- they'll have a sharp turn right after the start. At your first event, launching won't help anyway; you'll be losing so much time elsewhere that it won't make a difference. Just start off the way you would if you were leaving a stoplight in a hurry -- no need for big smoky burnouts, but don't stall the car either.

Suggestions? I've got plenty.
  • Walk the course! You only get a few runs lasting a few minutes total, so don't waste your runs learning the course. Instead, show up early enough so that you can get in at least two course walks. Ask someone experienced to walk with you and show you which parts of the course are important. Try to really remember where all the turns are, because as soon as you leave the starting gate, your brain will stop working for around a minute.

  • If you find yourself out on course and not completely sure where you're going, don't drive 110% -- you'll just get yourself in trouble. Drive at 90%, 80%, 70%, or whatever pace allows you to comfortably find and complete the course. If you go 110%, you might luck out and set a better time, but you'll learn a lot more if you drive more slowly while paying attention to the course and how your car flows through it. Once you learn the course, start picking up the pace.

  • Remember that big slides are always slower, so don't pull any Dukes of Hazzard stuff.

  • Don't worry about how well you do. Everyone sucks the first time -- everyone gets beaten buy some guy in some clunky beater the first time. Some guys leave and never come back -- they'll never learn how to go faster than that beater. Other guys keep coming back until they're faster than everyone else. Who would you rather be?

  • Last but not least, have fun! That's what we do this for. We own awesome cars, and this is the way they're meant to be driven.

Actually, I bought my S2000 to replace the car I totaled. As for how it happened, autocrosses are supposed to be held on wide-open parking lots with nothing to hit. This one was held on a narrow airport taxiway bordered by trees, in the rain. I lost it in a slalom, went off, and center-punched a good-sized tree. Whoops. Still, I got turned around, bought my S2000, and kept at it -- this year has been my best ever results-wise.

Keep the shiny side up...
