proper downshifting technique?
Ok, this is sort of a two part question thats been bugging me for a while. After seeing a recent post about damaging a part in the transmission from shifting from 6th to 4th and skipping 5th completely, I thought I'd ask.
btw, I fully understand and practice the concepts of heel/toe and rev-matching, thats not what this is about.
First, when the need arises to downshift by several gears, like being in 5th and dropping to 2nd or 3rd for a corner, is it OK to just go from 5th to the desired gear, skipping 4th, etc in the process, or should you incrementally downshift 5-4-3-2?
Second, should I engage the clutch in every gear as I downshift, or keep it pressed the whole time?
example
in 5th
press clutch
shift to 4th, match revs
release clutch
press clutch
shift to 3rd, match revs
release clutch
continue driving
or
in 5th
press clutch
shift to 4th
shift to 3rd
match revs
release clutch
drive

No problem skipping gears, just make sure that you are in the right speed range so that the lower gear doesn't go ballistic, unless I guess you want to use it to slow down in an emergency. You also have to be careful of course to hit the right gear. If you mean to go from 6th th 4th, don't accidentally put it in 2nd. Ciao, Tonino.
in 5th
clutch in
shift neutral
clutch out
rev-match
clutch in
select gear
clutch out.
if you rev match WHILE you are pressing the clutch, you are not matching the flywheel and input shaft at all.

1. When skipping gears, give the synchros plenty of time to do their job - don't speed shift.
2. Match revs for the gear you are going to. Don't downshift to a gear that will put your engine above redline, even accidentally. Going to too low a gear and overrevving is the main cause of blown engines in the S2000.
hmmm ..another dumb question.
i thought if you press the clutch, its in same situation as you put gear in neutral?
guess not? cuz i just to rev match while pressing down the clutch.
lead me to right direction masters~

1. You don't need to downshift through all the gears. Just make sure that you are braking enough that your overall speed is with in the limitations of the gear you end up selecting. ie 2nd gear. Definately rev-match.
2. Double clutching is not required
3. Engaging the clutch and then systematically shifting downshifting through the gears is pointless if your not releasing the clutch.

neutral = transmission output shaft disconnected from transmission input shaft

If you're skipping multiple gears, I think I would recommend this technique.
