question about different models and reliability
im very interested in an s2000 and have done a lot of research. my question pertains to the reliablity of the earlier models compared to the newer ones. There are plenty of 2000-2002 in my area bellow 50k miles for around 20 grand. Are there any serious changes in the 03 and up that would make it worth my wild to spend the extra money?
Think about it this way: If the car you are interested in (whatever model year) is still running, then depending on MY,
The MY2000 cars have lasted 5 years.
The MY2001 cars have lasted 4 years.
The MY2002 cars have lasted 3 years.
...
The MY2005 cars have lasted 0 years.
So which MY cars do you think is more reliable? Obviously the MY2000 because they have lasted the longest.
But you should take a look at the FAQ to see what was changed from MY to MY. Good luck with your decision.

The glass rear window is the only "significant" change that I would appreciate. That being said, I've had no reliability issues with my MY00 and have no regrets choosing this one over a MY02-Up.
There were changes to the internals of the motor, transmission, and suspension through mid-year 2002. Then a fairly major redesign in '04.
The '00-'01 cars typically report problems with clutch buzzing, second gear grinding, 4th cylindar scarring, etc.
The only change between '02 and '03 was the oil jet bolts. These help to provide more oil for cooling and lubrication to the underside of the pistons. This change was made mid-year 2002. If you search for "oil jet bolt" you should find the last VIN with the old bolts. Even if you buy an '02 with the older bolts the upgrade to the new ones is not terrible.
The radio changed between '01 and '02. It still sucks though.

is the 4 cylinder scaring caused by anything in particular or just the design of the engine. Wost case scenario i buy one and this happens, how exstensive are the repairs.I was on the s2k marketplace and found updated "Engine Oil/Banjo Bolts " Im assuming these are the ones that have four holes instead of two. thanks for the replies!
