Default question about the new hp standard

i am sure most of you have heard that there are new stricter formulas for calculating hp that all auto manufacturers must comply with by 2008 model year. For some reason Honda decided to do it immediately, which may not have been the smartest strategy but is the reason all the hp #'s went down in 06.

my question: the 06 s2k is now rated at 237 hp, down only 3 while many cars are down 10-15, like the TL for example which dropped from 270-258. are the ap1s also 237 on the new scale, or would they lose more? Good to know how I compare to the newer cars.

The only hp that counts is how much gets to the rear wheels of your s. You can find this out on your car by having it dyno'd at a reasonable price ($50 in my case). That way there is no speculation, and you know how much hp you have. For comparison with a MY04, my s was dyno'd at 209.8.

the 2004 models put down 5-7HP more than the 02-03s, and they get about 5HP more than the 00-01s.

Does that mean that they have less according to the standard. maybe, but not necessarily.

the horsepower test is at the crankshaft. I could have sworn the 04s have a somewhat better primary reduction gear in the tranny (am I right?) which could mean less resistance and a better wheel HP number.

Honda rated them both the same at the crank. Are they the same? who knows. Also, with the exact same test conditions (VERY VERY IMPORTANT), All F2xCs may actually put down the same HP.

When it comes to what really counts MOVING FROM POINT A TO POINT B AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, both cars are about equal.

INDYMAC - Actually, there is NO true way of finding out the power. That's why Mustang, Dynojets, and I forgot the 3rd type all yield different WHP ratings. A comparison is only valid if all cars are actually dyno'd under the same conditions on the same type of dyno.

Why don't you just laugh at him for owning a car with front wheel drive?

Just take him on a back road somewhere and then see who is laughing! Bye Bye TL!

What's important is "power to weight" for example: a 400hp GTO is not much quicker than a 190hp Elise.

The TL probably weighs 600 lbs more than the S2000.
