question about rev matching

it would have to be engaged for you to rev up. you engage the clutch, hit the gas pedal to the right rpm and shift into the gear at the same time
Anyway, there would be no way to "rev match" with the clutch engaged in gear... although if you are talking about in neutral then this is what's called "double clutch" downshifting and is not necessary in a modern car at all. Anyway, to rev match all you have to do is push down on that clutch pedal ("disengage" the clutch), shift down one gear while you give the throttle a quick push in order to match the revs to what they should be for the next gear down, and let the clutch back out.
Rev matching != double clutching
Rev matching = clutch disengaged to match engine speed to road speed
double clutching = clutch engaged to match engine AND transmission to road speed.
I just rev match when I downshift...things are smoother and I'm not racing around town

rev matching makes the downshift smoother on a downshift and takes some stress off the gearbox, but is in now way necessary, it wont really make much of a difference other than the smoothness of ride on the shift.

the car will buck a bit, resulting in a harsher shift and you'll get engine braking occurring, as long as that is what you want then feel free to do it. Rev matching just feels so much smoother and it is easier to accelerate after the shift.
