Question: Buzzing / Rattling in transmission?
When I'm driving around at relatively low RPMs, I hear an incessant rattling noise below my shifter/behind the radio tuner which leads me to believe it's my transmission. Then I was browsing around this site and came across this service bulletin:

[00-054] Buzzing From the Engine or Transmission While Decelerating

While decelerating in 3rd or 2nd gear, a buzzing or rattling comes from the engine or transmission between 4,000 and 3,000 rpm. This noise sounds similar to a heat shield rattle, and it goes away if you press lightly on the accelerator pedal or disengage the clutch.

Sure, bazillions had this problem back in the day...............hence the TSB (Technical Service Bulletin). Some lucky ones had the clutch replaced under warranty from Honda, but it was hit and miss if they did it for you, or if it even solved the problem. The thing is it is a function of the springs in the clutch and that vibration is transferred through the gearing, and eventually to you.
Honda reps have spoken at length to us about it at the bigger S2K meets (Megameet 3, I think). They assured us that there is nothing MECHANICALLY wrong with the car. You can run like that for a long time, if you can stand the buzzing.
Ofcourse you are out of warranty so you'll have to go your own way. I'll tell you that when I replaced the clutch (still with OEM parts) that it went away.
There is another symptom you can check into and is a hell of alot less $$ to deal with. Check that you shifter isn't doing the rattling/buzzing. There is a fix for it in the DIY section and involves greasing the bottom of the shifter.
Hope that helps,
Hockey

By about 35k miles (in the spring of 2006) the rattling/buzzing from my '00 got so bad I couldn't stand it any longer.
I replaced the clutch disk and I actually like my car again. I should have done it a couple of years earlier rather than putting up with a car that sounded like the worst GM ever slapped together in their darkest days.
So far, the noise has thankfully not returned. But the jury is still out: the defective original disk didn't make any noise at 10k miles, which is about all I've put on the new one. I hope it doesn't come back, because I do like the car but don't want to own some poorly-built bucket of bolts that rattles and buzzes.
