Great for overall convenence but NOT reliable what so ever.
My dad bought valentine like a few months ago and did a lot of research. Basically radar detectors work ONLY if the radar is 1 in your direction weather pointing at you head on or pointing at your from behind it has to be in your direction. 2 The police has to have the radar detector on. My best friends dad is a cop for 20 years and he says cops dont ride with radar on and they usually dont leave them on when waiting for a speeder due to the detecters inless they are really lazy.

Basically great buy for more less safty net but if you plan on using it for anything more then just a safty net NOT a good investment.

I swear by my Beltronics 995s. I have an older model in my S2000 and the new one in my STi. Incredible range on both units, particularly in the heavily used Ka band. Some like the Escorts, some like the V1, but it will always be Bel for me. Saved my ass more times than I can count. Problem is, I think the cops are now using some new kind of radar technology here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I've caught the CHP and local PDs pointing their radar guns at me and nothing registering on either one of my Bels. That is not the most comfortable feeling in the world.

around 300 i think the escort 8500 X50 is what you want. I never tried one before and i got a killer deal on one...and wow i really really like this detector.

You dont get the arrows like you do with the V1, but you do get a very nice display mode that will tell you when/if you have multiple radar... ex: driving by the mall getting the x band BUT also K band from a cop.

If you search, they can be had for under 300 easy.

Based on my personal experience, I wouldn't say this is necessarily true. As far as cops here in the San Francisco Bay Area go, I would say they leave their radar on about 70 percent of the time. I can't speak for the rest of the country, but this is generally how it works out here. As far as it being a safety net, I would agree. You have to drive with a radar detector as if you don't really have one in order for it to work most effectively for you. There will be a lot of cops out there who will pace you without their radar on. I've been caught red handed a few times with this tactic myself.

I've got my escort 9500i mounted beside the rearview mirror and hardwired in. If you do a lot of mixed city and hwy driving, the 9500i is perfect because of its gps based filtering as well as sensitivity that adjusts to speed.

Here is where I put the mute button for convenient access.

I have had my escort 8500 X50 for three and half years. no tickets, works great but it won't save you from being a dumbass so you have to drive somewhere near the speed limit or you won't be able to slow down in time of the alerts. also cop can just give you a ticket by estimating your speed which happened to me but it was before I had my escort.
Radar detectors, alteast the good ones, bascially help in reducing the likelyhood of being singled out from a group of speeding vehicles but you still have to be remotetly near the speed limit for them to be effective.

also due to the location of the power source I had to stretch out the smart cord (which is coiled up like a phone cord) and run it underneath the passenger seat in order to place the detector in the middle of the windshield. This does makes it easy to use the mute button on the escort power cord, just slide your elbow back and it is right there. works great!
