Actually there are only 3 places (2 states and 1 district) that do not allow RD use in autos

VIRGINIA (No detectors )
OKLAHOMA (Cops can cite as a traffic violation)
WASHINGTON, DC (No detectors)

Damn Commies !!!!

Also I am using an 8500. Had it for 5 years. And to follow what others have said, if you are being stupid, it will not help you.

when i lived in mississippi that was absolutely true, but here in salt lake city, UT it's false.

it's area dependent--there's no requirement for them to drive with it on OR off. it just depends on the individual cop and what's common practice among the local area's police.
Thankfully most of the cops in this area run their RADAR full time, and even when they are using instant on or even POP, they don't wait long enough between sampling traffic to avoid giving you plenty of warning. It's that rare cop that is smart enough to sit in silence until he sees a likely suspect that presents the greatest risk.

I don't think I ever came across a cop in Mississippi that wasn't running his RADAR full time.

Here's a question: Where in the car do you guys mount the radar detector?

If I was to get one I would have to either hide it very out of plain sight or always put it in the glove after driving so pepole aren't tempted to break in and steal it.

My radar/police detector are my 2 20/20 eyes w/ 360 view. No ticket for over 2 years now and never had a day w/out going over speed limit.

Copied from a post I made in similar thread, but relevant here:

Methinks there are a couple of Beltronics shills posting here. I've never seen an independent test (ruin by a site that doesn't sell detectors) that put a Bel in the same class as the V1 and whatever the best Escort happens to be at the moment.

I'm going to trust Car and Driver, whose tests are always won by Valentines, and my own experience, which is that the V1 I've owned for a decade still finds cops far enough away to save me, finds them earlier than all other detectors when I'm traveling near other speeders, gives few enough false K signals that I keep trusting it, has usable direction indicators that really help, can be reprogrammed to suit my needs (which include turning off X band altogether, because it isn't used around here), and has no other relevant disadvantages. Rumor has it the 9500 is pretty much as sensitive, and it's a lot prettier, but I like my arrows.

And as for anyone claiming they don't take heat -- I guess my seven years in Texas doesn't qualify, and maybe I misunderstand Valentine's apparently-great willingness to fix any problems, so I'm sure you know what you're talking about.

Btw, for the best mounting spot, remove your driver-side sunvisor (which rarely does any good), cut away a piece of the molding, and direct-wire behind the moldings. High mounts are best for range, it's highly visible to the driver but barely visible through the windshield, and the mute button is within easy range.
