radar dectors
Passport X50. Been using Escorts for about 5 years now, from the 7500, 7500S, 8500 and now 8500 X50. I don't speed too fast/too often, but usually hover 5-10mph over the limit. Considering I'm young, drive a silver convertible top down on blue wheels with no front plate, loud ass ehaust and CR lip/wing/etc - no tickets/pull overs - I'd say they work pretty well. I usually know WELL in advance of seeing them that I'm coming up on them, or they're coming up on me. Like someone said, its a RADAR detector, not a COP detector, but I will say that I HIGHLY disagree with the sentiment that most cops don't have their radar on most of the time - they usually DO.
The Passport 8500 X50 is a fantastic radar detector and always rates high (along with the V1) - sometimes beating it out, sometimes not. It looks nice, easy to use/understand, and is very effective at doing what its designed to do.

I had one for quite a while, but recently sold it to to not using it very much at all. I guess it may have been more handy if cops up here sat in more than just 2 places in town, but since they are never anyplace else it is mot much of a problem for me. Plus I don't speed much it at all so it wasn't a big deal for me. I did it find it necessary, but that is in my situation and experience. Depending on where you are at though, one might come in handy a little more than where I am at.

Remember that it's a radar detector, not a cop detector.

it's area dependent--there's no requirement for them to drive with it on OR off. it just depends on the individual cop and what's common practice among the local area's police.
