Rating Blizzaks in the snow/ice
I am using LM 22's in the winter in Chicago...call me crazy but i think I have better steering feel with these compared with the stock tires (I am using stock size, stock rims) Sure the Blizzaks roll over easier but I get a sense of whats going on better - maybe because the stock tires have higher limits that I rarely reach...
OWNED A DAILY DRIVER MIATA FOR 12 YEARS WITH A SET OF MOUNTED SNOW TIRES THAT MADE FOR SAFE AND ENJOYABLE DRIVING. CALLED TIRE RACK AND GOT LM-22'S MOUNTED ON SSR INTEGRALS. PUT THEM ON THE S2K IN NOVEMBER AND HAVEN'T MISSED A DAY OF DRIVING. GREAT HANDLING, PLOWS THROUGH SNOW AND ICE, AND COULDN'T BE HAPPIER WITH THE CHOICE. WITH MOUNTED SNOWS YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT FIRST EARLY SPRING WEATHER TO GET THE SO2'S BACK ON. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN APPREHENSIVE ABOUT A POORLY TRAINED TIRE INSTALLER TEARING UP THE WHEELS. AND WHO DOESN'T LIKE CHANGING 4 WHEELS IN THE PRIVACY OF YOUR OWN GARAGE? MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING. IT'S A MACHO THING.

Let's put this post to rest. I have lots of information to make an intelligent decision on choosing a good winter tire and I thank everyone for their input. I'm thinking of getting new rims (18") and of course new "summer" tires when my current S03's need to be replaced. Then I am going to buy winter tires, mount them on my stock rims and use them exclusively in the winter. This should make driving in the snow/ice much safer and maybe if the budget allows I will get a hardtop to truly winterize the car.
I cant believe you even tried to drive in the chillies with those SO's, thats suicidal.
Ive got LM22s, and although the car is still pretty loose, it is totally controllable. I find that while I cannot drive the car like I do in the summer, I can still have some fun (sometimes way more fun than in the summer).
I am 100% convinced that those who are more comfy driving their S fast in the winter are probably better preppared to deal with it during the summer. You get to explore the limits so more often as they are much lower.
But seriously, my SO2s just about killed me a few times even before the snow arrived. All it takes is cold weather, and you have got to drive very differently.
