I've tried it in winter months sometimes, I've had gas station attendants yell at me for doing it. Quite honestly I can't see any danger in doing it, I would be much more worried about static electricity rather than a running engine. It's almost as bad as the cel. phone warning they have on pumps, I just can't see the risk.

There is a difference between turning your engine off and turning your car off. The signs at the gas stations all say turn your engine off. The only time I really ever keep the car on is when my wife is with me so that she can keep listening to the radio.
The radio should still work even if you shut the engine off (but leave key in).
