Default Replacing Engine

i have to replace the engine in my 2000 S2K. the reason why is another story. is it better to use a complete used engine or go for a new one?
i found a used one with 28k miles on it (the original had 63k) the cost will be $4,700 parts and labor. my honda dealer says $8,500 for a new one.
also, is there anything else i should be doing to it, performance upgrade or maintainence, while it is apart?

That seems like a really good price for a used engine. If you are gonna stay NA then just throw it in there. If you are looking to go FI then now would be the best time to upgrade the internals.

You should make sure it has the newer oil jet bolts. Easy to do if its already out of the car.

the reason i need a new engine is , according to honda anyway, that water got in through the CAI (AEM, no by-pass). an independent mechanic who looked at it disagrees with honda. i purchased an extended warranty when i bought the car (used) but of course they won't cover it. as soon as they saw the CAI they had their answer. i spoke to a lawyer about what my options might be and think i am just going to go through small claims court and try to get some of the money back.

i was happy with the CAI it seemed to give a little extra boost when the vtec kicked in and i liked the sound. i'm not sure if the intake was at fault but it is pretty close to the ground. it was raining that day, i had parked the car before it started raining for about 30 min. and started the car up again after it stopped. it blew before i got into second. i didnt drive through any puddles. i dont see how water could have gotten in.

the question is, will i put a CAI on my new (used) engine???

Sorry about your problem. Several owners have destroyed their engines with the AEM. The problem appears to be not so much driving in the rain as it is parking in the rain. The water off the hood and fender run down on the filter and fill the lower part of the tube with water.
When the search function is working you will be able to pull them up. There have been several.

The holes that allow the water to be funneled there can be plugged.

Injen makes a heat shield that would keep water off the filter as well.
