Default rev matching

i get the processes but i cant seem to get it to the right rpm all the time.

the car sometimes drops rpm quickly because i blip too much, or revs up if i do too lil.
is this bad for the car??

and also when i blip, do i need to give it gas like regular shifting, or can i just blip and let go of clutch without any gas??

Not terribly bad. Just a little more wear. Watch some Best Motoring videos for some examples of fancy footwork... or some WRC videos.

Youtube also has some great videos on rev-matching and heel-toeing.

It's just a matter of practice -- like many other things. I can almost get it by feel now but every once in a while I'm a bit off.

Does anyone know if it's any "better" to over rev versus under rev when blipping? I've always assumed the former but only because there doesn't seem to me to be as much weight transfer when I slightly over rev versus slightly under rev. Googling doesn't turn up any immediate hits.

What does "better" mean?

Over matching is like lightly launching and under matching is like lightly bogging off the line.

If you're rev-matching down a gear to pass a truck on the highway, then I'd rather over match.

If I'm heel-toeing for a corner, I'd rather under match to not blow through the braking zone.

Letting the clutch out a little slower will help soak up the gap rpms while you're learning.

Good question. I normally ask that of people that don't explain what they mean by "better". Thanks for covering several bases.

With practice, you'll get the hang of just how much you need.

I hum to myself and try to match the "pitch" I'm going for.

In the beginning, I used the TurnZero Gear calculator to see what "target" rpms I'd be shooting for.

Then I also started paying attention to my upshifting rpms. Because the change in rpms going up the gears are the same target rpm change going down....

get some Pumas or something. If your driving around in lugz or boots or something its hard to get the accelerator feel. I hate driving to work in uniform with boots on. The clutch becomes intelligible to my foot.

Puma's are what I wear when I go out on on my "spirited driving" days and nights. I try not to rev match and heel toe too much if I'm not wearing appropriate shoes...and also cause I'm lazy.

Haha. I picked dress shoes with a rounded heel and a thin enough sole (rubber)... just so I could drive with them.

My wife brings Pumas with her and swaps in the parking lot.
