If I shift slowly or below 4000ish it shifts nice and smoothly. However, when sitting or just starting, it is difficult to get into 2nd sometimes, whether the tranny is cold or hot.

It sounds like what you're probably describing is not the "grind" but rather the "notch" in 2nd and 3rd. The "grind" will sound and feel like a first time manual driver trying to get into gear without the clutch. The "grind" is also highly intermittant and difficult to reproduce when you take the car in for service.
The "notch" on the other hand is very consistant, and more noticable when cold and it gradually smooths out as the gearbox warms up. All the cars exhibit this trait, the question is how much it bothers individual drivers. I suspect the reason so many people feel that something is wrong is because 4th thru 6th are much smoother. This is by design. Only 3nd and 3rd have triple cone synchros and this is why they feel different than the rest. Remember, the gearbox is directly under the shifter, there are no cables to 'dummy up" the feel.
This was posted by dlq04 in response to a similar thread and I really felt it described whats going on in the gearbox.
[QUOTE]I believe its normal, at least for many of the cars. I had it in my 2001. However, after 8,000 miles of careful shifting 2-3 shifts are now generally notch free ( I suspect its bedded in properly now). Anyways, here's my notes of the topic -- which I've posted before. The notes cover all model years.

I wonder why Honda called it "Rio Yellow."
"Perfect Yellow" would have been more accurate.

OK, here's a map of the track named after my favorite color, you gotta love Eau Rouge! Of course since my wife is driving our Silverstone car, she might agree with Barry, but I like my Spa yellow 2001.

Colin,
Thanks again for all of your help! Things have been a complete zoo around here for the last week or so. We just hired several new people, moved offices, had to buy new furniture for the new office, etc.
I called you last Thursday at the Acura store to tell you about the decision (I purchased last Wed night) but I think you were at lunch. I meant to drive by and visit but I didn't think you worked weekends and I haven't had time yet this week.
I really appreciate your help so far and will work out a way to reciprocate, whether through me or other people I send your way. If you think of something that I can help you with, call me.
Also, I would love to participate in the local S2000 events.
I have actually heard the car grind on the 1-2 shift but I will try to be very gentle for a while to see if it works itself out. I haven't been hard on it before, I simply shifted quickly and was suprised to hear the grind. I have heard it twice so far. It makes me rather nervous...
Thanks again!

PS. MAAAAAAAN I love this car!

I have accepted it as a 'personality' trait of this car, and have enjoyed ownership more for not letting the rough edges of this jewel of a sportscar bring me down. Of course, if it happens too often, I would take it in to Honda to have a look. Mine seemed to go away, as I can't even remember the last time I grinded the shift (and have never grinded it since I started autocrossing about 4 months ago).
