Default Road tripping in the S

My girlfriend and i recently took a road trip to Green Mountain Falls, CO. Its a really cool, very small town in the mountains about 20 mins NW of Colorado Springs. roughly 1000 miles from San Marcos, TX. i drive a 2002 Suzuka that now has 84K miles. i just figured i should post my findings from the trip for anyone who was as curious as me as to what road tripping in the S2000 would be like. i honestly thought we might make it 6 or 7 hours and finally give up and get a hotel but we made it in about 17 hours each way. this time includes gas stops and food breaks and whatnot. the trip was definately more comfortable for the 5'4" girl than it was for me at 5'11". i survived though and found it was typically more comfotable driving than trying to sleep.

we actually averaged 30 MPG over the trip. i figured for about 26 but was pleasantly suprised when i got about 31 MPG the whole time and shelby got about 29 MPG. (she was just recently taught how to drive stick in preperation for the trip so she still has some fine tuning to do on her timing ) this was all driving within 68 to 78 miles per hour and with the top up about 2/3 of the total trip. one strech shelby cruised at about 85 for while and brought the MPG down to 25 by the next stop.

another concern for me getting ready for the trip was how two people could pack for 6 days in an s2k. i took the foam tool holder out of the bottom of the trunk well and just put the jack and a few tools loose in the bottom of the well. you definately need to take soft luggage. we managed to put two full size duffles two backpacks and shelby's toiletries bag in the trunk. i probably could have sqeezed my custom cover in around everything as well but left it behind. in the front we only had snacks, drinks, gagets (phone, camera, GPS, ipod), and a pillow. the top was up for most of our trip since its too hot in texas most of the day. when the top is up though the rear dash where the top folds up into can easily hold shoes, a bag of snacks, and the pillow.

the car performed flawlessly and consumed about 3/4 of a quart of oil over the whole trip. we did have the texas classic, "hit an armadillo" incident. shelby was about 7 hours into her stretch on the way home and in the middle of the night a small dillo walked out into the road and she leveled it at about 65mph . muffed up the bumper pretty good but nothing serious. probably 300-400 bucks to have the whole bumber repainted later on down the line.

well that turned out longer than i thought but i just answered all the questions i was trying to figure out before my trip started. i could and would do again if i needed to but will probably take a bigger car on my next road trip. im thinking a classic 70's fullsize convertible would be pretty sweet.

Good write up! Reminds me of the trip my wife and I just took in June. Our trip was much shorter, 570 miles each way, but any trip over 8 hours is long in my book. I'm not sure if I'd ever take another long trip in the S but it's certainly something we all should experience at least once. It was certainly a bonding experience for myself and the S. And the winding backroads of Crater Lake, Oregon will never be the same!

good thread.
Me and the GF took a trip in my S from Dallas to St. Petersburg. It was actually very comfortable. On the way back we took turns driving and drove 17 hours straight.
I agree with the soft luggage, we realized too late that you can't fit a full sized suitcase in the trunk. Having no real soft luggage, we just packed everything into trash bags and flattened them. lol @ pulling into a 4 star hotel with clothes in a trash bag.

My wife and I took a drive up the coast from San Jose to Gleneden Beach, Oregon and spent a few days up there. It was a nice trip other than the deer at 3am that jumped off the side if the hill on to the road and in to my fender. We've done other multiple day trips but none quite as long as the Oregon one.

Oregon is great for their signs that say "slower traffic keep right it's the law" or something like that among many other things of course

The S is great compared to the GSXR in terms of room but with the bike traffic is never a problem

Also, we got sunburned from driving top down before we even got into Florida or spent any time on a beach.
