I had my clear bra installed a month or two after I bought the car and my bumper is as new as it was from the factory. I had the front done , including the OEM lip, plus mirrors, mirror masts, rocker panels, door handle pockets, wheel wells, door edges and the entire rear bumper for 700 bucks. It not that much to get this installed. Its worth every penny for peace of mind and it even makes it easier to wash the bugs off the car. I recommend it to anyone.
Like others have said, I just don't look at my front bumper very closely. But I hate it when I find chips in my hood, fenders, and even my rear quarter panel!...how the hell do I get chipped there?...did the damn truck in front of me throw a curve ball?...grrrr!!!
It does help, but you still get the stray rocks that hit outside the clear bra.
So, if you want to be "chip free" don't drive the car. However, if do make the purchase understand that even after you spend several hundred dollars ($600-900 for full kits), you will still have frustrating chips here and there.
I didn't want to deal with as many chips so 1 day later the clear bra was on - it saved Chris's paint when somebody turned across in front of him - scraped the tape but the paint was fine.

Actually one effective stragety for avoiding rock chips is to not follow people very closely. I have found that leaving more following distance reduces the number of rock chips CONSIDERABLY.
i have to agree with the "give plenty of room to the car in front" theory...
and i disagree that you cant do it in so cal-
i live in so cal and my car is 5 years old now-
the front is almost new, just like the rest of the car!
if i had to drive freeways every day, i would put on a clear bra-
