Roll Bar??
That's too bad Mike. I just reveiwed the information about the Cusco bar. The Cusco bar does not use the stock mounting locations, but does meet many of our criteria. It fits under the soft top and is more substantial than the existing hoops. It would be great to have an alternative.
As long as the organizations and tracks continue to accept the car with the stock hoops there is less reason to get one. If I got turned down somewhere I wanted to go I would consider, but thus far I have not had a need.
Chris, I've not had the need arise yet either, but I would install the bar for improved protection nevertheless. If Mike can design a bar that installs without too much fuss (replacing the roll hoops in the stock location preferred), gives added protection, and adds the ability to mount harnesses and camera bars, I'd do it ... especially if it could be purchased for under $500.
I'm also interested and close to making a buy on the Cusco as there doesn't appear to be an affordable alternative.
I like 3333's custom job, but 1K US is 1600CDN these days and really way too much for me at the beginning of my first season. Half that, and I'll pull out the VISA.
My order of preference is
Maintain Top Operation
Removable
Stock Locations
At least 1" over my helmeted head
SCCA Legal
Finished Look (powercoated black, no chrome)
I'm sure I can get on 70% of the tracks/classes I apply to, but the reality is, the stock hoops are not high enough. They're close to FIA regulation and I'm sure if I was 5'5" they would easily protect me, but at 6'0" and a helmet, if the car flips, I'm in the hospital.
Also by the same token, a BMW school I'm attending says convertibles have to run with the top up (stupid if you ask me) but obviously I need full top operation just as much as SCCA legal.

Mike,
You might not remember our discussion about this several months ago but I would like a roll bar. I don't mind cutting or welding and/or removing the stock roll-hoops. Build quality, price, harness loops, convertible top clearance, and SCCA approval would all be big on the list.
Thanks,

More pics of Cusco roll bar.
I think that this is very close to what most of us are looking for. It comes as either 4 or 6 points and I think that the 4-point roll bar can be upgrade to 6 points later if necessary.
4-points 55.000 yen
6 points 85,000 yen
