basically... the S2000 outperforms the Rx8 in almost all aspects of performance. I know one member/ former member who traded his s2000 for an Rx8 (had a baby coming) and he misses his s2000.

Is it just me or is the rx 8 supposed to be pretty slow? I always thought it was about the speed of a RSX-S. I drove my friends several times and raced him several times as well. I didnt feel the power. Most of my friends who have driven both cars feel like it feels similar to the S except w/o the vtec. I do however like the look of the car though, but thats all that i liked. I cant even say i love it because of those extra doors on the side that cut up the lines. My friend is very depressed ab his purchase. For a long time he was in denial. Now he just hates his car. Please enlighten me with some information that i am missing ab this car. ie. quatermile/0-60 times and whatever else is important that i missed. Thanks

Hmm I don't know....I have driven extensively both the 192hp RX8 and the 231hp RX8 (both available in Greece at way lower prices than the S) and I own a 2002 f/l S2K and I don't think they are easy to compare...The RX8 is sophisticated, quiet, loaded with room and extras and a very forgiving handling which you can exploit all day long (I' ve been owning/upgrading/exploiting MX5s for 11 years and I can tell you the RX8 feels very simmilar in the handling section). The S2K is cramped, noisy, with high levels of grip but once you go past them it is tricky unless you know what you are doing. On the other hand the RX8 is too soft, consumes considerable amounts of fuel and oil and is a coupe whereas the S2K is firm (slightly on the hard side), with a sporty feel, revs hard all day up to the indicated 9500 rpm/limit with an impressingly low consumption plus its a roadster with killer looks. If you want your car for sheer enjoyment and are ready to live with lack of space and abundance of noise go for the S, if you like to travel fast and quiet, need room and like to abuse your car with ease and comfort stick with the RX8. I would not trade my brand new RX8 for an older model S2K unless it was a super deal!! My oppinion!!

Nicely put.

you gotta lot of good opinions and advice here. i would add after having three honds products and two mazda ones that the mazda experience was not as prone to quality as the hondas were. had to do alot of stuff to my miata that had to do with defects and workmanship issues wherewas the hondas have always performed above and beyond in terms of cost of maintenance and freequency.

small case in point, my s2000 has used no oil in 13,000 miles. all i have done is replaced the wiper blades, oil and filter a few times and put gas in ...no oil use, none, nada. i get an honest 22-23 mpg in mixed traffic that includes (up and down coastal mt ranges (SF Bay Area).
No defects or rattles. still have original tires that look 40 % there.

owneship was way better than my last miata, a 2001ls, which needed a new long block due to #4 bearing issues, 3 clutches due to shudder enherant in the vvt 1.8 since 2001, a new gas tank and filler, a defect since the 1999 cars, two set of brakes due to warping(i am not hard on a car and i have never warped brakes before in any car),and some minor stuff i can't remember. all the time they paid for towing and a rental like a good car co should...i went back to honda. in fairness my 1990 was a gem.

the hp issue came out after i bought my car, mazda said 155hp with the new vvt engine, the car had only 142, so mazda offered my a $500 visa card and free maintenance for life of the then 36/36,000 warranty, which i took or else they would have purchased my 5 month old car from me for what i bought if for which was a better solution i found out as the car fell apart.

bottom line, mazda is a co that makes good on their mistakes but uses you as a beta tester till they get it right or the warranty runs out. i beleive honda products, and i have owned three of them, are better quality autos in general, thus the honda S2000 is a better choice over the mazda product: my #1 bias. #2 is that the S2000 gives me more of what i want per what has been already written.

i am sure i would have used more oil and way more gas with an rx8, but i could have carried alot more stuff and folks with me. that's the real difference, a sports sedan vs a sports roadster, both sports cars.

not to offend all the RX-8 owners or anything.

i have test driven the RX8 a couple of days ago, and very disaapointed about the car ..i dont know exactly why some people keep saying that the RX8 is one fast automobile. i just dindt seemed that fast on my test drive.

My test drive:
i got in the car and wow very nice interior that's a plus! now i start the car, drove out of the dealer driving slow...took some corners, damn this car got some good ass handling!! im very impressed!!

Now i took it to the freeway..Now as soon as i enter the freeway i totally mash the gas pedal all the way, AND UMMMMMM pwahahaha i just scratch my head in dissapointment...

WHERE IS THE GO??? oh my goodness the car is DOG slow!! where is the POWER??? i actually have to keep it in 8,0000 RPM to get that power to get out of the hole.... Good job on the ROTARY mazda!!

to my honest opinion...the car is just priced right...it's an okay car, nice interior, good handling and that suicide door isnt bad at all...but it's lack of power is very disaapointing... MAZDA did ed up something alrite.

My Mazda experience was very different than hirev's. I owned a 1996 miata and it ran great. Routine maintanence items( tires, brakes, ect) were my only repair expense. The original clutch had 185,000 miles on it when I sold it and it still shifted strong. When buying a mazda, you have to pay attention to were it was made. Some of the none japan made cars share parts and manufactoring faculities with ford. Since both the RX8 and miata are made in japen that is not a problem.

I have to say I like the RX8 especially in that Winning Blue color ! Wish the S came in color close to that. One thing I do not get is the extra doors thing. To me that is a compromise for family hauling . Nice but no compromises when it comes to your sports car. Get the S no questions about it.
