is the S overpriced?
Lets not forget that the "S" is not a luxury sports car. That is not its intention or market. If it was the car fails. This car was build "racing" inspired. Light weight without the amenities. If you want all the glitter get a boxter.
This is like a super bike or a really fast go cart. Apples and Oranges..., Like one poster said compare with the Solstice or the Saturn Sky..., they are comparable in price, but it ends there.

s2000's are imported, whereas a cr-v or a civic or an accord are built here in the states.
I'm sure the fact that there's no shared platform might play a role, as well.

Damn, beat me to it Whaler.
consider ourselves lucky, some countries such as Taiwan/Singapore pays 60~65k for a brand new S,
110 k for e92 m3 cuz the tax law, i think S2000 price is just about right compare to japan's market being sold here in the states.

For comparison, the only reason why the 350z is relatively reasonably priced it's because it shares so many components with the FX and G. It's also why it's a relatively heavy car. You can't have your cake and eat it too - engineering (R&D) costs money. The S on the other hand was tailored made for its purpose, and that's why it may seem expensive - a function of economies of scale.
