My 96 mustang and ap2kyle's probe are good examples of fun cars that can get dinged up and, apparently, driven through fences ;-) and the damage doesn't ring up thousands in bills. If I drove my S through a fence... First I'd wonder what the hell I'd be smoking and second, dollar signs would be dancing around my head.
It was a dumb story, raced my old movie theater boss at night in an empty unlit parking lot. Was focused too much on my rpm gauge, saw i pulled him in hard, but didn't bother to notice he was slowing for the fence. Luckily, my pop up headlights were the only real damage, they were ripped right off the car. I remember driving home with them aimed in all kinds of directions after trying to put them back in. The next day i noticed giant light scratches that went the length of the car. Luckily wax removed most of it (car was white, hid it easier). Dumbest day of my life. Oh and the total bill was only $250 to fix!

I read somewhere that an insurance company study found that, when asked, about 85% of people said they were "good drivers".

The 15% that aren't must all live around me

I think a S2000 is great for a 17 y/o, unless you can find something faster. Fast cars and teenagers have always been a great mix. Sure insurance companies don

Ok as much as I didn't like it back when i was 16-17 I was driving a civic, and I wanted a faster car, but after having a WRX and a S2000 at 19-20 and attending numerous autox events, I have learned that I would have gotten into alot of trouble with a fast car. So be careful, if you do get the s2000 GO TO AUTOX EVENTS trust me doing plenty of those will get you to learn the limits of the car, and you will have a greater respect for it. You have to put your pride down with this car too like when it rains, with my s02's that are kinda worn down when it rains pretty hard i will throw my hazards on and drive about 45 to 50 mph on the highway when the speed limit is 65. Just be careful.

Buy a Miata. Period. Great great great car to learn in, light, handles like a champ, and has 145 HP. Not high by many standards, but in a car as light as it you'd be surprised. Plus, it's rear wheel drive, reliable as all hell, resale value is good and you'll learn to drive.
I started out with a MG had 80 hp.....and im still amazed that i lived thru

that.

Like another guy said... If you're going off to college DO NOT get an S2000. It'll get all dinged up in the parking lot. There's nowhere to wash it, and no way to protect it from the elements; be it sun, snow, rain, or drunks all itching to trash your beautiful car.

"responsible, safe driver" is not the same as "good driver".

I saw many teens drive slowly (5 to 10 MPH less than posted speed limit) on the right lane most of the times, made right turn on green at 10 MPH or less ..., and on the other hand, I saw many maniac teen drivers all the time too.

BushdioNJ said that he is "responsible, safe driver", we should to give the benefit of the doubt. Flame him does not do any good.

I was not intending to flame him. I was purely pointing out that it was interesting how he focused almost entirely on the pure power of the car and said he would probably kill himself and then backed up those statements with a meager attempt to convince everyone (and possibly himself) that he is a safe driver. His statements struck me as being at odds with each other.

Safety/death issues aside, it'll kind of suck if you buy an S2000 now, since when you want a new car I think it'll be a disappointment. You'll be either in the middle of college or straight out of college, at which point you'll be hard pressed to find a fun car with a ton of power that looks great. I say reward yourself with an s2k say, at graduation.
