Is there a specific reason for this nonsense.... Im guessing my dealership is going to say this is normal then??? I dont want to have paid for a car i cant afford to keep oil in.....

With the guys burning nearly as much as me, have you noticed it getting worse over time or is it pretty consistent?
My consumption rate has not been getting any worse over time, i've put about 25,000 miles on the car since owning it and the oil consumption has been pretty consistent throughout.

I bought the car off the original owner, and he told me he has been running synthetic oil in it since new. I didn't ask when exactly he started using synthetic. One of my guesses is that he switched to synthetic before the recommended break-in with conventional oil was complete, and maybe the piston rings have not fully seated.

s2k2fear, what type of oil are you using?? Do you know anything about the history of what type of oil was run in your car?

Somebody recommended to me once that i try switching over to a conventional oil for an oil change cycle to see if that reduces my consumption. Haven't tried it myself yet but it may be something you want to consider.

I have all of the receipts for oil changes from the previous owner.
They used Mobil 1 as far back as I can read on the receipts. However after having my car for only a few weeks it was making a noise, (low oil knocking or something). I was buying new tires, and had a friend at dobbs check it out. He said I was low on oil so he added some mobil 1 from his own stash, because thats what all the receipts said my car had been using. Well the knock got louder. I took it into the dealership, long story short the guy said he never heard the noise, its a loud engine blah blah 4cyl are like that. I later found out its because he changed the oil right away. used Pennzoil or something he said. I did some forum jumping and read something about mobile1 and some yellow flake that can mess with our engines so i decided to go a different route. I have ran Royal purple for 2 oil changes after the pennzoil and it still burns massive amounts. Engine still knocks when somewhat low. I tried Synpower as well... that burns just as quick. Not sure what to do anymore other than drop it off, my schedule is a nightmare tho.

Thanks for all the help guys..Sorry this is jumbled im at work

Have you tried using a thicker weight. Try out some 10-40 for your next oil change.

If you wanna stick with a synthetic you may wanna consider amsoil 10w-30, it is a lot less volatile than say mobil 1, so you may have less consumption with the amsoil.

My AP1 has 55k on it. I drive quite moderately considering the car. I say I am in vtec less than 5% of the time. I am using Amsoil 10W-40. This oil has got a nice wide viscosity range and no problem in winter at all(NJ).
I suspect the only reason most MFG's recommend 10W-30 or lower is for fuel mileage. Plus the AP1 book says 10W-40 is OK. My later Honda's have totally removed it, again for MPG I assume.
Anyway my consumption is around 1qt. per 4K miles. But I know when I play with the vtec mode on its rare occasion the consumption skyrockets (to perhaps 1/1k or worse).
I almost suspect I switched to Amsoil too early is part of the problem (did not allow for proper seating of rings). I should have switched to it after 15k on petro oil vs around 9K.
Sure is a little disappointing to have this sort of consumption but really few other drawbacks in this car. I have never kept a car this long and keep wondering what I would be able to replace it with, that is such a terrific machine for the $$ if I ever do.

I think BMW's the only bang for your buck option that compares to the s2k. Can't go wrong with ecu's that are all tunable and free scheduled maintenance for 4yrs!
