There is no way that anyone can determine without any doubt what caused a fire on a car that was completely destroyed like this. Could have been many different things. The finding of a bad headgasket on a car that has been on fire at 3,000 degrees doesnt' tell you anything...could have happened during the fire.

Also, a blown headgasket will leak coolant before oil as the water jacket is the closest to the edge of the headgasket.

Wow, it really hurts to see these pics. Sorry about the loss .. could it have been the exhaust manifold touching a plastic component?

I'm curious how USAA handles this. I have had them for a few years and am very happy with their insurance, but I have yet to make a claim, especially one of this nature.

Good point about the coolant being closer to the edge of the gasket than the oil. Guess that narrows it down to the oil filter coming loose, and the oil starting a fire that the fuel line quickly fueled, or more likely, the fire starting and continuing both on the fuel side.

Anyone know if anyone makes a replacement bit of reinforced fuel line/fittings for the engine bay that doesn't involve redoing the fuel system from the pump back?

Yeah the USAA adjuster is being very chill about it. but like what u said i have herd nothing but great things about them. he said the claim process is very simple. especially cases like this clear cut as he said They will go look at it and as soon as the adjuster says its totaled. its transferred to the settlement dept and thats pretty much the end of it.

And when i looked at the car today the oil filter was fine a lil melted but hadnt spun loose. im pretty sure its a fuel fire seeing the drivers side had the most heat. but there is nothing left that isnt cast steel on the drivers side. so yeah, pretty much guess about what started it. ill keep every one posted about what the adjuster says and let u know about the simplicity of the claim. give them some positive rep.

Sorry for the loss but glad you're ok. Yeah, getting shot at is no big deal but seeing your baby ablaze can bring tears to a man. This incident would make me suspicious as to how well the car was maintained by the previous owner. I bought my S from someone here on the forums and I intentionally bought one that didn't have any engine mods. Where are you stationed?

This is exactly what I predicted they would try! Did they send you a check in the mail with no explanation, hoping you would cash it?!
