S2000 Jealousy
<venting>
I have only had my S2000 a week, and already I've heard the following comments:
1. "Boy, they must be paying you good."
2. "(punk singing)...He works hard for the money."
3. "I'd like to have a car like that."
4. "I wish I could afford a car like that."
5. "It's made by Honda, right? Must not be that expensive, huh?"
6. "What did you pay for that?" (heard this one about 10 times)
7. "How much is it costing you a month?"
8. "That car doesn't fit you." (I'm 6'2" and I have more room in the S2000 than in my old Cobra.)
9. "You look like Fred Flinstone driving that thing!"
10. "I suppose no more looking for a house, eh?"
The jealousy is unbearable. It takes a lot of fun out of owning a S2000. For all the individuals who asked how much the car costs, none of them were enthusiasts or prospective buyers. I'm 26, share an apartment with my girlfriend, and if I want to buy a performance car to fulfill my hobby...what's wrong with that?
I come from a blight-ridden Philly neighborhood and have worked my way up through the company I work for over the last four years. During that time, I have doubled my income, became the Marketing Mgr for a 200 employee company, and moved to a Philly suburb neighborhood. I've done all of this without a dime given to me, and have earned everything I have. Nothing special here, just an average American striving for the American dream like everyone else.
Now, I could have spent the same amount of money on a SUV and would have never received the same remarks. It would just be nice for people to congratulate me rather than wish evil or share their jealousy.
It's quite a cruel, selfish world we live in.
As I'm writing this, someone just said, "Well, at least I get to drive a Lumina home." I said, "Be happy with what you have, a company car." This guy's whining because he doesn't like the company car he has...man o man, it just doesn't end!
Oh, and another thing. I love how people come up to me and ask me about the car when they NEVER seen me in it! People must be doing some talking, I guess.

It's a shame how many people are like that. I've had my s2000 for less than a month and have gotten mostly positive remarks, but have had a few "Wow, business must be good." comments also.
I've actually found myself hesitant to show my baby to a few friends who are inclined to make resentful remarks - then I remind myself that I've worked very hard to buy this car and shouldn't let another person make me feel uncomfortable/apologetic/defensive.
Here's wishing you great happiness w/your s2000 (and no more neg. remarks!).

You bought the car for you not other people. Drvie it and have fun, forget what others say. It is either they don't want a fun car, or they wish they could have a fun car. Either way don't let it spoil your good time.
I used to live in PA. (phoenixville and haverford) It's the area you're in. $10 says you're probably one of the first they've seen.
let em be jealous! They should be. You drive one of the most amazing cars on the road!
Take a drive to NY or DC (highway or backroads), It's a nice drive. You'll see people in better cars looking at your and the drive will remind you why you are holding the keys!!

Just ignore them. You should be proud of everything that you've accomplished. You worked hard for that car, and you know what it took to get it.
Actually, I don't consider #5 an insult. I'm proud of the fact that the car was relatively cheap and can still kick butt over it's more expensive competition.

Don't sweat it, they'll leave you alone sooner or later. One way to handle it is to take them for a spin.

The one question people ask that's annoyed me since I've owned this car is "How much did you pay". I mean, I don't go to into people's homes, especially not strangers, and ask how much their house cost. I've finally gotten over it and now just say "list is 32k" and leave it at that. Our society is filled with nosy, jealous people. What can you do? I just keep thinkin to myself, "well at least I have an S2K baby" and drive on

It seem most people have experienced what you have and we've all learned how to deal with it. all of the people that made those types of comments to me were really just kidding and told me what a beautiful car I have and they wish they had one as well. Time will take it's toll on the neigh sayers. You've earned it, you enjoy it.
