Default S2000 Killer?!

I have now heard from 3 people that Mazda is going to in 2003 cram a ROTARY engine into a Miata! Something like 270 hp!

Also heard that the PT Cruser will go convertable too. They said it was on CNN. I still can't believe it!

Can anybody confirm this?!

I read somewhere that the PT Convertible would be unlikely as it would change the classification of the PT Cruiser from a truck to a car and change its CAFE classification.

I doubt the rotary Miata is true - but the PT convertible as a late 2002 or early 2003 model is very likely.

I thought that the convertable top was going to be to tall or something and the conv PT was unlikely?

Mazda is coming out with a new RX-8 next year. It is a rotary that puts out 250 HP w/o forced induction. I'm trying to get my wife to trade her car for that one!

There are already a bunch of kits out (especially in Australia) to install a rotary engine in to a Miata. Will we see them here in the U.S., most likely not.

This week's Autoweek explains that it is unlikely that there will be a PT convertable due to CAFE standards. They did suggest, however, the possibility of a duel certification; one for the cruiser and one for the convertable.

Based on how positive the feedback was on the PT convertible, I'd be surprised if DaimlerChrysler DIDN'T find a way to build it.

As for the classification, I don't think going from a tall wagon to a tall convertible would affect it.
