S2000 Killer?!
I seriously doubt the rotary Miata rumors. A rotary engine, although it would be very cool, goes completely in the face of the point of the Miata (a modern interpretation of a classic British roadster). Mazda has gone out of its way to use this explanation for not putting V6, etc. into the car in the past. I would be very surprised if they changed course now.
As for the PT cruiser, I have also read in a few spots that CAFE reg's prohibit the convertible. Perhaps every bit as important is Chrysler's capacity to add an additional line for the car. Last I heard, they were pumping those puppies out as quickly as possible and couldn't keep up with demand for the current car. I can't imagine adding another line to the car (no matter how cool) until that situation is resolved. Heck. last I read they had postpoined the more powerful turbo engine for the car just because of capacity.
Of course, I could have my head up my posterior and be completely wrong. I still think that there's no way we're gonna see a glass windowed soft top for the 2002 Stook. Goes to show you what I know?!?!?!?

While we're on the subject of S2000 killers, anyone seen the new Nissan Z coming out in '03? It has a 6 speed manual 280hp and 270lbs of torque - yikes! Again, priced under 30k, here's a picture of the concept car:
I told them about the RX-8 but he was sure that it was a Miata convertable that they were putting the rotary engine in!
One said it was all about the newest CONVERTABLES comming out.
I think he is smoking something! Though it is pretty nice to think that everybody is out to get you......just that they are 2 years out! Plus most WON'T be a convertable that will beat you!

I have heard the rumor about the rotary Miata from the local RX7 club, it would likely use the same engine as the RX8 which runs at 250hp I believe...
It would make sense to put a rotary in a Miata since it is only 1.3 liters, and isnt very torquie...

As for the classification, I don't think going from a tall wagon to a tall convertible would affect it.
