Chris Delena -

- Pealing paint - not an issue for me
- trans grind - not an issue ever for me
- rear diff - not an issue ever for me
- rear window - still clear if i wax it
- dash - not dimpled, pregnant or hanging
- engine problems - ZERO with abuse
- trans grumble - it is a small issue

it appears that there are many many people who have had no problems with their cars. Possible some people are more picky, or like to find problems with stuff?

I do not understand the back window problems. It is plastic, but cleans up very nicely with some wax (mothers w/ carnuba is what I used, right or wrong). My car's top goes up and down 2-3 times a day on any decent day.

I am very pleased with the S2000!

Scot

Scot, it is good that you are satisfied with your car, as are many others. I was simply observing the sample of cars represented here is far from perfect. It seems that many on this board are fast to defend Honda and condemn all other manufacturers based upon a few examples. I pointed out the glass is half empty and you choose to observe only the part that is half full.

There is plenty of evidence regarding the problems or lack of regarding this model, but we will probably never have access to comprehensive statistics.. So I have my opinion and you have yours but there is nothing to argue about.

Chris,

sounds good. I like to look at as much as i can with the half full idea. I guess if i blew out my rear diff, had some grinding, etc... I would be pissed off too....

did you get the extended warranty, to at least get a free rental???

Actually Chris Consumer Reports already has the early Data. Based on their survey responses the S gets an Excellent reliability ranking. Corvette gets much worse than average, BMW Z3 gets average, Porsche Boxster has not enough data to predict.

I just gotta say that this car has been perfect for me. I do have an 01, which I'm glad to say, and I'm just tickled pink. I was a little surprised to hear of the problems actually, since I believe Honda to be the best manufactured vehicle in existance, but this car is different in a lot of ways. As said before, my opinion could have been very different if I'd had the problems. Honda should have given it a manual top, and scrapped the radio door, a glove box might have been nice, as well as a glass rear window with some trick quarter windows, but hey, who cares. I'm still in love!

They are comparative rankings.
In other words, surveys are sent out to owners of all car makes and models. Then the number of problems reported in each category, say "engine" or "transmission" are grouped per car category.
If under sports cars the average number of transmission problems was 1 per 100 cars, then this would be the average score for this category. If a certain car, say S2000 has 1 per 1000 transmission problems, this car would get an Excellent ranking under "transmission" If a car like the Corvette gets 1 per 40 cars with tranny problems, then this car would get a "much worse than average" score under "transmission".
Then all the individul categories are combined and a total predicted reliabily score is given.

This is a fairly good way to do it.
The readers of CR do tend to be more convervative car buyers than the average person. Still, the sporty car category includes responses from all kinds of sports car owners. The results give a relative, not an absolute idea of the models reliability.

Individual cars of course vary. I'll bet the most reliable cars like Camrys or Accords have a few lemons in the mix.
Heck, I have owned 5 Toyotas, most of which were very reliable cars. My last one however went thru 2 engines in 80,000 miles before I sold it. Does that mean I think all Toyotas are unreliable? No....just that particular car.

mr. alley...i suspect that a goodly number of cars that have had tranny problems have frankly had the $hit driven out of them....i suspect that i could wreck the gearbox and certainly the clutch of any car available, new or used.....i frankly don't normally spend much time on the rev limiter, much less in lower gears, nor feel the need to get eyeblink shifts....don't get me wrong..you can really drive this car hard...but imho you can be a major factor in it's longevity. btw,buy the goddam car..you'll hate yourself forever if you don't.
