Another great post Bieg.

A heads up for you newbies. Do yourself a favor and do a search for some of Biegs other posts. He's never been shy from controversy and he's had some really, really good posts in the past. In fact, he had one that was titled something like "that special S" or something that was just terrific.

I had the hots for a Lotus Elan back in the sixties myself; ..... never got one. I only had to wait 36 years to get the world's best Elan in the S2000.

I thought that I remembered the Offy being supercharged in the late 60s. Is this correct?

The original Elan was RWD. The mk2 was FWD when Lotus was under the ownership of GM. It actually got very fine reviews as one of the best handling FWD'rs. But at IIRC about $30K, it wasn't much of a seller in the US. Nice looking car though. So was the original, which the Miata heavily borrowed from.

Elan was a sweet car. Whenever I think of it, two pictures come to mind. It was Jimmy Clark's street car and I recall watching David Hobbs race one at LeMans. Beig, like you, I was always into the David vs Goliath approach as well...

There were a few different versions of the Offy during the years it was produced.
