S2000 oil dipstick level

I make sure that the engine is warm and then check the oil level five minutes or so after the engine has stopped running.

IMO, an oil change that doesn't fill to top of X's is a fail. Yes, if your level drops and is anywhere in between H and L its still good, that doesn't mean its ok for it to be like that coming out of a shop.

Exactly. Especially on this car which most will use up that half a quart before its checked again. Fail! I always fill to the very top of the H mark and don't mind seeing it slightly above that because it will be back down to the H mark in no time after it burns through it.

Cold or just warm after sitting for a while if you want the most accurate reading from the oil pan. When its hot- checking at the gas station during fuel ups) part of the oil hasn't drained into the pan yet and will show typically x to xx lower on dipstick then actual.
